Learn to Live

A short essay on love.

I spent enough time in the shadows to know that the edge of everything is nothing. I've spent enough time digging through broken and buried memories only to bring up the past over and over again. I was judged and bullied. I was the underdog who came out alive, bruised and battle-worn. I've never been everyone's cup of tea and looking back, I'm glad I never fell into that stereotypical archetype. I'm ecstatic that I broke the mold when society told me to sit down and color. I'm glad because the picture that I've painted is so much more beautiful.

I've only ever preached one message. I've only ever spent time trying to defend one idea. It is an idea that wraps itself within our minds every day. It is a want, a need, and a desire. We yearn for it but fail to show it in every other aspect of our lives. We want it to happen to us, but it doesn't always come from us. Well, this is how I feel about the whole thing.

It is only when we stop walking on eggshells and take a leap of faith when we can really apply this idea. We must let go of our preconceived biases. We must let go of everything that tries to hold us back. Too often we forget how truly powerful we are, and how the feelings and words inside of us are constantly trying to escape. It is time for us to free ourselves from the confines of the darknesses we've always felt. A time to step into the light, fearless and ready for the day. It is time for us to become who we are meant to be.

And it all begins with love...and while I know it's not easy there is so much we can learn from each other if we just learn to let each other in.

We should love the people we want to love. We should hug them when we want to hug them. We should tell them that we love them whenever it comes to mind. We should spend time with people we enjoy spending time with, whose smiles could light up a room and whose laughter is one of a kind.

We should feel every little thing to the fullest extent that feeling something awards us. Stand outside and feel the rain on our skin instead of rushing inside to get away from the wetness of it. We should feel each grain of sand, so small and seemingly insignificant, beneath our feet. Sit in the sunlight and feel it's warmth on our skin.

Life is too short to take things for granted. Life is too short to worry about what others think of us or our decisions. For the love of whatever or whoever we believe in, we need to love each other. Good or bad; right or wrong; male or female; gay, straight or transgender; black, white, or Hispanic; Christian or Muslim; etc. Let all that stuff go, and just love the people around us.

Love the way the flowers smell even if you never really liked flowers. Love the way the sky turns green after a nasty storm or how humid it gets in the middle of summer. Embrace it. Because of the fact that you can feel it just goes to prove that you are still alive, and what a blessing that is!

Don't waste another moment stuck in the thoughts that drag you down. Inhale the good, exhale the bad. Learn to love today, learn to look forward to tomorrow. We are only given one life. What will you do with it?
