Polyamory as a word itself has two meanings: Poly meaning many and amor meaning love so polyamory means to have many loves. Yet polyamory is more than just a word. It is a lifestyle.

What about Jealousy?

Ah, the green-eyed monster, every poly family's first question. Here's the thing, jealousy can be found in all relationship types, doesn't matter. What matters is that one understands why they are jealous because jealousy itself is nothing more than a perceived fear or threat to that person. In a poly relationship, open communication is a must and this includes a discussion on any jealousies that may come up.

Communication

There should be communication in all relationships of course but, it is especially important in a polyamorous relationship. In fact, you can't have a successful poly family without it. Polyamory is based on trust and communication and communicating can sometimes mean having the most uncomfortable conversations in your life. It's not to say that the conversation itself is hard, but that you have upset someone in the family or that you may disagree with someone that you may have come to love and respect.

In truth, polyamory is no different than any other relationship type. They have jobs, lives and children just as the rest of us do.
