If you are newly single there is good news in that studies show that it's a GOOD thing; so let's discuss the many ways that being single is good for your health. If you just ended a relationship it probably doesn't feel so great right now. You are examining your life ready to embark on a solo journey, and want a healthier attitude about it. You are ready to socialize but you aren't quite ready for another relationship. Here's something guaranteed to make you feel a whole lot better - a list of the ways being single is good for your health.

The Advantage of Time

One of the many benefits of being single is the advantage of time. Your time is no longer monopolized by another and you are absolutely free to spend your time doing whatever you want to do. When you were married or in a relationship, your life and the time you spent was not your own.

Particularly for those who are married to their jobs and careers, the advantage of extra time for yourself cannot be overstated for those rare occasions when you are not working.

Being one of the single people means that you can start diving headlong into your own interests. Say you have always wanted to take a wine tasting course, sky-dive, or even learn how to knit. You now have the luxury of doing what you want to do when you want to do it.

You can indulge in creative arts, or self enlightenment. You can read deep books that you were meaning to get to. Time is on your side and every single bit of free time is an opportunity to enrich your own life.

Socialize with new people, go to new coffee houses, explore your city, travel a bit. These are all things you can look forward to now that you are without a relationship. There are so many things to do that you have never tried, and now you have free time to explore. It is one of the main advantages and ways being single is good for your health.

Getting off of the Emotional Roller Coaster

A friend recently told me that her mental health improved after she ended a relationship. She spent a few years of her life on a crazy emotional roller coaster with wonderful highs and crashing lows. Her emotional equilibrium was completely off balance in the whirlwind of that relationship and now she feels great being on a calm emotional keel.

Studies corroborate that sentiment. Simply stated, being single can be better for your emotional or psychological health, and it is one of the most important ways being single is good for your health. In fact, single people can be better off in this way than married people.

Emotional health can't be overstated. You now have the opportunity to enjoy some peaceful and emotionally balanced time that will help in the healing process. And that naturally leads us to the next reason being single is good for your health.

Looking Out for Number One

A single woman I know has never married and she likes it this way. She states simply that she likes herself better than anyone else she has found so far. She enjoys her own company, and she reaps the benefits of a healthier lifestyle because she is only worried about pleasing herself. She doesn't need a relationship to define her.

Somehow single has gotten a bad rap in being connected to loneliness, but this is a great time to begin to like yourself first and foremost, and put your own needs, desires, and whims before anyone else, to self-actualize and get to know yourself a bit better.

This is a time to reflect, to meditate, to come to peace with yourself in all your personal glory. Learn to love yourself first and foremost while being single.

Losing Weight and Getting Fit

Study after study shows that single people, both single men and single women, are more physically fit and leaner than their married counterparts. Even those in serious relationships tend to not prioritize weight control and time in the gym when they become comfortable in a relationship. A friend told me recently, that when she was in a long term relationship, she had gotten "fat and happy" because fitness and weight control became less important.

Again, there is more time to pursue fitness as a single person. We all know that fitness and weight control are signs of a healthier person, and it is one of the most important ways that being single is good for your health.

You may be going out to eat less, and that will peel off a ton of weight just in that respect. Single people tend to keep less junk food on hand and spend less time as couch potatoes.

Socializing

One of the key ways being single is good for your health is that you will socialize more with a larger variety of people. It will give you the chance to develop a better social life than you ever experienced before. Again, due to the luxury of time, you will be indulging in things that you are interested in, giving you the benefits of many and multiple opportunities to socialize.

It's fun and healthier to socialize with friends without the emotional ties of a relationship. You will have more time to spend with your groups of friends, and there is nothing better than girlfriend time or guy hangout time. There are so many fun times to look forward to with friends.

Particularly for individuals who are not naturally outgoing, this is the chance to develop better social skills. It is the time to find a new friend or two who shares your interests.

Are You Ready to Embrace the Above?

Remember, all of the above ways being single is good for your health are based on many different research studies. They may hold the key to your fulfillment, and your ultimate happiness. Accept these benefits and enjoy your healthier life!
