A Wonderful Memory to Write About

A bridge downtown for a visual of neon lights

So before I start the actual story, I'll rewind back a week to when I got the invite for the event. It was a lazy Sunday and a typical boring one, as well. I was laying down and for once my phone had rung. Upon reading it, I see the name of a beautiful girl. Keep in mind I've grown quite fond of this girl and to see her name appear any time on my phone is truly a blessing. So she invites me to an event called the River of Lights (It's a light show downtown of where I live). With a sudden jolt of energy I reply rather quickly saying that I'd love to go with her to see these lights. Going back to the Friday of the event, it's also James Douglas Morrison's birthday that day (December 8th). I begin to get ready rather early being insecure about my attire for that evening, simply wanting to impress her to the fullest, and about six o'clock she comes to get me (I don't know how to drive, unfortunately). I walk outside to find her car not near my house, but rather down the street. I laughed a little at this. So I go down the street with hesitation, unsure if that is her car, but as I look into the car, I see her for the first time in person. I open the car door to the passenger seat and see her on her phone. She quickly looks up and greets me with a hello and I nervously say it back. In my mind, a million things begin to plot, for instance: how beautiful she looked and how gentle her voice was. We begin talking and I play music for some background noise. We share a common interest for a lot of music, so it was rather easy picking music that she liked. Knowing that it is James Douglas Morrison's birthday, I choose to play The Doors. So we talk a little bit about the 60s and how great the music is as well as the clothing. Shortly after a few giggles and more conversation over The Doors, we finally arrive to the River of Lights. We come to find that there's nowhere near to park so we end up going down this deserted street near a McDonald's and an abandoned gas station with homeless all along the fence of it.

We end up parking in this huge gravel lot behind the gas station. We joke about it getting stolen and move on our way to the front of the gas station and begin walking down the sidewalk to the event. As we walk, she pulls out cigarettes and begins to smoke one. I watch her and notice her very cute looks, her blonde hair and tiny figure, and when she gazes at me, she has the most striking blue eyes I've ever seen. It is hard to look away from them. It feels as if they tell me so much with just a blink. We finally arrive to the ticket booth and I pay for my ticket and she pays for hers. We start strolling in alongside the other people in a neat line and I see the trees decorated with flashing neon lights in a wondrous position. The lights shape these simple trees to be huge neon red and green palm trees. Keep in mind that this is December, so it's rather cold this time of year. This night, however, is especially cold, with a light breeze blowing right through me. So we decide to go inside to buy something hot to drink. I end up buying her hot chocolate, and for me too, as well as a big cookie because I know she'd like one. I felt content being able to buy her these rather simple things. And so begins our night roaming through this neon light show of vast colors and scatters of people.

I can't help but to keep looking up and being astonished how these people have shaped all these lights to be sharks, bears, and other animals and plants, as well as some festive lights like candy canes, Santa, penguins, etc., to celebrate the upcoming holidays. We continue to walk around and talk. I gain the occasional giggle or smile and I can't help but feel nice that I'm in this moment with her. I sometimes walk behind her, enjoying the idea that I've gotten this chance to be with her, that I was lucky enough to be the one she asked for this evening. We walk around 'til her feet ache and we sit down on a bench, observing the frozen pond with lights scattered about as well as passing people. We get up to walk around a little more and talk of memories to laugh about 'til, finally, we've seen all that the River of Lights has to offer. We walk back down the street when suddenly, a particular man crouched over who's zipping up his backpack asks me at random: "Hey, wanna buy some shrooms?" Politely, I decline his rather odd offer and we get back to her car, only to joke about the little incident. So we get back in to talk a little more and we pull out of the gravel lot to go to McDonald's for a drink. As we start nearing the neon M, she hits a curb and we both jump with it. Laughing, she says how she didn't see the curb and I begin laughing with her too. We sit in the parking lot for awhile as she lights another cigarette and looks on her phone. We end up leaving when, suddenly, she gets a text to go get her cousin and sister. So we drive over there to go get them and we stop at her cousin's to use the bathroom. Awkwardly, I go to the bathroom to find there's no lock on the door, so I position myself to where my back is pointing towards the door. I struggle to pee but finally manage to and I go into the room right next to it to meet her cousin and her cousin's boyfriend. We become acquainted and head on our way over to get her sister and then back to her house. We arrive and come through the front door to be greeted by her upset mother and, in seeing this, I hug her trying to comfort her. We sit down at her bar area and begin to talk and laugh. They all come to me asking about myself and how I had previously met the girl. We speak for a while and I tell them all about myself and we laugh and listen to good music. Her mother then tells me about how she's always telling them about what I do. In that moment, I feel beyond flattered that someone felt so highly of me. We talk and talk and talk and I feel so much at home with these people—almost as if we weren't complete strangers moments ago. We laugh and hang out more until it is time for me to go back home. I say my goodbyes, sadly knowing the night will end. We drive back to my house and I say my goodbye to the most amazing girl I have ever met. I watch them drive away and feel so happy but sad that the night has to end. I sit in my room, watching my ceiling replaying the whole night in my head over and over and over 'til I fall asleep and dream about her.

This truly was the most memorable night I've had in a long time. To see her smile and laugh is a gift I wish to always get.
