An Un-Traditional Engagement
Why It's OK to Stray Away from Routine
When you hear of someone getting engaged, you automatically want to hear the story of how it happened. Everyone has a different way of doing things, and what may be ‘romantic’ to one person, may not be to someone else.
This is totally the case for myself and my husband. We had gotten engaged in the most unromantic way possible, but the way it happened is just how we roll.
After a veeeery long break, (we’re like the real-life Ross & Rachel, to be honest) we finally rekindled our love & started dating again in 2012.
My husband is a HUGE movie-lover. I mean, you can ask him about any movie using minimal descriptions and 9/10 times, he’ll know what you’re talking about. So it makes perfect sense that one of our first dates together was going to the movies.
Being that we were only 16 at the time, it was really one of the only things to do besides go to the mall and walk around or go out to eat. This tradition has carried on up until the date he actually “proposed” to me. I’m using quotations as our engagement was anything but “traditional”, BUT - It was PERFECT for us.
We were dating for about two months before we had gotten engaged. It happened in April of 2012; I wish I could remember the exact date, but I’m a hot mess and forgot. We were sitting on the couch, watching a movie, when I casually said, “So just so you know, I’m not taking any more birth control. I figured I would let you know in case I happen to get pregnant.”
That’s what every guy wants to hear! No, it’s actually not but Austin was really cool about it. He said, “OK - I wouldn’t mind having a kid with you. But maybe we should get married first?”
My reaction: “HAHAHAHA -- OK!” Austin's reaction, (in his mind ‘ ok, b*tch, I was serious and you’re over here laughing at me.) In real time: “No, really, I would love to marry you. We’ll go tomorrow and pick out a ring.”
And that’s exactly what we did. No hired photographers to catch us in the act (that sounded weird....you know what I mean though), no fancy restaurant, no kneeling on one knee. I, myself, never wanted to get married, but now I can’t imagine having said ‘no’ and not being on this journey with him together (insert whatever sappy-ass emoji here).
Our wedding, however, was one for the books! At the time, my soon-to-be hubby was working at our wedding venue, so he was able to make sure we had the best of the best. And let me tell you, he (and the entire staff) went above and beyond to make our wedding the absolute best. It’s now over 2 years later, and we are STILL getting compliments on how amazing our wedding was. I believe many people use the terms, "best wedding we've ever been to" and, "wedding of the year!" It was like something out of a movie except much better because both of our families LOVE to party, so you can only imagine how insane (in a good way) the night was.
A lot of people always question our engagement, (annoying AF) and ask why it wasn’t something more 'because we have known each other for so long'. But for us, it was more than enough to just hang on the couch, with my favorite person, with a bottle of wine, and a movie. Plus the ring he picked (I picked - he paid for) is GORGEOUS!
The real takeaway here is to let anyone who is on the outside of a relationship know, that things do not have to be done in a certain tradition. It's the year 2017 and my husband and I are anything but conventional. The bottom line is people, worry more about your relationships and whether or not your own memories mean something to you or not.
Now if we could just get everyone to stop asking us when the babies will get here...
