I Grieved for Someone Who Wasn't Dead

Her first thought was "What weirdo is trying to message me now?" They met on an online dating site! That first night they talked for hours, he was great! He was handsome! He could hold a conversation and remain a gentleman in those conversations. They opened up to one another, he had a shady past but he was working hard on turning himself around. He had substance abuse problems and in his past lead him to make poor choices; Poor choices that had lead him to jail.

Their relationship was a whirlwind one! Within 6 months of dating they had moved into their own apartment together. Within 8 months she was pregnant and they got engaged. She was over the moon! She had everything she had ever wanted. To get there though she had to overlook some red flags! Red flags like his drinking and how when he drank he was Jekyll and Hyde. He was a wonderful man, her family loved him, her friends liked him. Aside from his substance abuse issues, they had a great relationship.

July 2008, they welcomed a beautiful little girl! Perfect little family! They had their own home, they both had everything they never thought they would have. He was an amazing Dad. He couldn't wait to get home from work to his girls. He would bathe the baby, feed her her bottle, and rock her to sleep; it was their time together. Let's fast forward 6 months later to January 2009. There was a horrible storm and all she could think about was him making it home safely. He calls and says, "I'm on my way home now." He never came home and she started thinking the worse (Or so she thought!) She called around to the hospital, the police hoping he wasn't in an accident; no one had encountered him that evening.

It's 8:00 at night and she is worried sick. FINALLY! The phone rings, it's him! He sounds weird, he tells her "I slipped."

Her first thought was he slipped on ice and she asks, "Are you OK?"

He tells her NO! "I slipped!" He had met up with a man from his past, fell off the wagon, he had been missing because he was doing cocaine! Another "Old Friend."

She yelled "I F***ing HATE YOU!" He hung up, the baby was crying from being startled! She had no idea what to do.

After some time and talking, he is going to take a taxi home. She called her parents to come get the baby out of the house before he gets home, unsure of his state when he arrives. He never came home! The next day she is beside herself, gets in the car, grabs her best friend and goes to look for him; she never found him. He FINALLY made it home that evening, the baby was still with her parents and she is filled with sadness, anger, happiness, betrayal. She felt like he had cheated on her, wondering how he could do this? Something so stupid!

That night as she lay in his arms, her head on his chest, listening to his heart beating; she can't sleep! In the middle of the night she finds herself researching everything she can about cocaine use; the signs of someone using it, the side effects of it. The side effect that stood out the most talked about the affect it has on the heart! She goes back to bed a little less angry, head on his chest, listening to his heart STILL beating, he was still alive and back. She stuck it out, they worked through things... For now!
