"I'm the main character"
Social media can be a wonderous place. It gives us an opportunity to share our best bits with the world, and to cultivate an online presence that can be used for making ones’ wildest dreams come true, whether this be finding love, starting a business or even just learning a new tik tok dance. But has the growing intermingling of consumerist culture and social media turned us into nothing more than products to be sold? A new social media trend of describing oneself as “the main character” has revealed a rather sinister side effect of cultivating an online presence, forcing us to redefine ourselves not by who we are in real life, but rather who we are in relation to all other content online. With a growing sense of disillusionment throughout the younger generations with organized religion and its teachings, is social media and the commodification of the self, filling the void left behind in our sense of purpose?

The Story of a Sock
The story I am about to tell you is one of the single most embarrassing and certainly most emotionally draining tales of my life. Sadly for me, this story is not one that yet has an end, but rather, is still a very present part of my existence that still manages to bring fear to my heart and sweat to my brow. I would also like to testify that everything mentioned in this story is true; no matter how ridiculous it may seem (the names have also been changed to protect the innocent).

4th of July in the Hills of Montana
I have been very lucky so far in my short life to have been blessed with the opportunity to travel, and have had many unexpected and transformative adventures. On one such day, I found myself at the house of a friend of a friend of a grandma’s friend on the 4th of July up in the hills of a tiny rural town in Montana. There was beer and fireworks and food to feed thousands, which was lucky, considering that there seemed to be thousands of people there.

I Hate the Snow
When I was little, there was nothing I wanted to see more than snow. Growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne, while there were certainly cool winters and plenty of rain, there was never any snow, and rarely opportunities to travel to places where there was such. Thus until the age of perhaps eight or nine, I had never seen or experienced real snow.
