Spanish Rendezvous
The season was summer, the country was Spain, and the experience was unforgettable! I embarked on a trip to Barcelona with a study abroad group. Nervous, shy, and cautious were my only companions on the plane. We were to meet at famous landmark, Plaza Catalunya. Timidly, I entered the plaza at high noon. The sun blazed down, making me sweat uncontrollably. “Deep breath in and out!” During professor’s announcements, I anxiously scanned the group. I was a bundle of nerves, as I realized I knew no one. I worried about being a loner. I prayed that I would click with my roommate. Hot and uncomfortable; turmoil settled in the pit of my stomach.

Lingerie on the First Date
We met at UCLA, our dream school. We were freshman starting a new job, at the on-campus candy shop. Both of us were from rural areas north of Los Angeles and we became fast friends! We were both finding our footing and we did it together. We shared our history from our small towns, we shared our fears of being at such a huge school, and we shared a decent, long lasting friendship.

Los Angeles to Mexico City: A Novella
After many disappointing dating encounters, I became hungry for self-enrichment. I looked inward as I reconnected with culture, music, and linguistics. My newest goal was to learn Spanish! During this time, I vowed to limit my media exposure to Spanish language outlets only. The Real Housewives was replaced with novellas on Telemundo, hip hop music was replaced with reggaetón and samba, and screwdrivers were replaced with caipirinhas and pisco sours. I immersed myself in Hispanic culture and Los Angeles became my training ground for exploring diversity. I was not discriminatory as I devoured content from around the globe, but, I focused specifically on Mexican content.
