People Watching
Yesterday was one of the first warm and sunny days we have had this spring, and was a good day to get out and see the town. As always, in Burlington, VT, Church Street Marketplace comes alive as soon as the temperatures go up. Tourists weave in and out of locally owned and operated coffee shops, bookstores, and apparel companies, college kids jog in groups, or ride their bikes between classes, locals pick up coffee as they walk their dogs, and restaurants dust off the outdoor furniture from the storage area, and set up for the dinner rush. But there are those who don’t have much to do; they don’t work, they don’t talk to most people other than to beg, or ask for spare change. Some are new faces, and others are known throughout the area as friendly and harmless individuals.

Stress and Your Skin
Stress is a normal part of our everyday lives, in fact, its expected, and comes in all shapes and sizes. From weddings and a new addition, to the family, to your car breaking down in the middle of the highway, and not paying the cell phone bill on time, we all experience stress in one form or another. Stress is caused by a chemical response in the brain, which releases the hormone Cortisol thus triggering the “Fight or Flight” response. When we do nothing, Cortisol is left in the body without use, and can cause damage to our bodies over time including issues with our hair, skin, and nails. Stress can actually cause skin to become more sensitive and oilier, which can lead to moderate to severe breakouts; women, who are more prone to stress, and show more physical signs of stress, may see shifts in their menstruation cycles, which can also cause breakouts, and possible delay, or halt, of their monthly periods.

Finding Your SPF
As Spring seems to have sprung, we all know that Summer is not far behind; with Summer comes days at the beach, boating, barbecues, and lots of sunshine. It's, in one's own opinion, the best time of the year. But sadly, days in the sun means a higher risk of sunburns, and potential risks of skin cancer, and severe sun damage. Fortunately, most sunscreens on the market today are more than efficient; however, finding the right one for your skin type is vital to save time in the sun, and for your skin, including any medical conditions you may have.

Autumnal Paradise
Autumn is a time to reflect upon the quickly passing year, as the last few months draw in and come to a close, one by one. A time to reflect upon what we have done, what we still wish to do and how we have spent the last year, how we have behaved towards others, how we have spent our money, run our households, performed at our jobs and how we feel about ourselves in general.

Remembering 9/11
Seventeen years ago today marks one of the most horrific tragedies within our great Nation that will forever replay in my mind. I was 11 years old when we had an indoor recess for a reason unexplained, then, after recess, we gathered into one classroom where my principal broke the news. I was shocked, sad, and moreover, scared of what could happen next. I remember running to my father, crying as I leaped into his arms. He soothed me, told me we were safe where we were and, the next day, he and my mother kept us home to talk to us about the attacks and why some people don't like Americans. I remember sitting there on the couch with my brothers, speechless.

A Series of Fortunate Events
I have always been one to look back in reflection of months and years past. This past year is no exception especially since it has shaped me into who I am at this very moment, typing on my laptop late at night. Like many people out there, I thought I had an idea of what I wanted out of life but like many others, I was still somewhat adrift, searching for some meaningful purpose in life and now that I have finally figured out a couple of paths I wish to continue on in life, I thought I'd share them.

Taking a U-TurnTop Story - August 2018
First of all, I want to clarify that this piece is not about a struggle with alcohol or an addiction but rather my decision to take a long-term break from the sauce. As I sit here, sipping my morning coffee and pounding away at the keys on my laptop, I find myself thinking about alcohol, moreover, whiskey and just the thought of that getting into my system is making me nauseous. The mere thought of smelling or tasting it makes me want to vomit right here, all over my new rug.

New Adventures Await
The sun has gone down, the sky is dark, and the street lights flicker amid the warm, mid-summer air. Birds continue to chirp to each other, kids shouting in their backyards, and a fan blowing cool air into my bedroom; well, what will formerly be my bedroom in less than 48 hours.

Stop and Smell the Roses
Nowadays, everyone is rushing from here to there, cell phones permanently attached to their hands, laptops and tablets not too far away, and everyone working and struggling to make the almighty dollar stretch as far as it can or in some cases, will go.

Life Ain't All Sunshine and Rainbows
When I was in high school a decade ago, I remember hearing part of a quote someone had written decades before that that said "If you think you're beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, then you don't-". I wish I knew who wrote that quote so I could give them a big hug to thank them for what they have done by saying those words. I not only heard them but I lived by them whenever the going got tough. I stood my ground and dug my heels in, not giving up, not giving myself the chance to curl into fetal position and allow the world to swallow me whole.
