Best Pick-Up Lines to Impress Women on Online Dating Sites

Although there is clearly a world of difference between dating in the real world and doing so from the convenience of a web browser, there are still many areas where the real and virtual worlds overlap.

One traditional sticking point in romantic encounters has always been the "pick-up line"–those often cliched comments which teeter between raising a welcome smile and causing the recipient to run a mile! It can be difficult enough to master this art when you're in a bar. But how should you broach pick-up lines on an online dating site? Here’s some advice to take on-board before you try.

Pre-planning

Firstly, it might be tempting to try focusing on certain lines that might meld the devastating wit of Oscar Wilde with the poetry of William Shakespeare. But, let's be realistic. When you're about to send a message to someone you want to impress on a dating site, it's going to seem obvious if you suddenly spring some verse comparing her to a summer's day or suchlike. Perhaps a better idea would be to step away from individual pick-up lines and think of more general subjects or topics of conversation.

You can always spend time poring over her resume, getting an idea of her personality and interests. You can then weave these into your introduction—subtly, though. Another big no-no is giving the impression you've been dwelling on her personal description. But harmlessly flicking through her profile would be perfectly acceptable and open up a whole universe of possibilities for your opening lines.

Say this woman states she loves the outdoors. Your pick-up line could then cover this hobby. You could mention you've just spent an enjoyable weekend hillwalking in X. The only thing that could've possibly have improved the experience would have been to have shared the trek with someone equally impressed by romantic scenery. You’ve taken her favourite past-time while hinting at romance. This approach is all about stoking a sense of empathy and is far more likely to have an immediate effect on how she feels about you than reading some corny line you've shoehorned into your messages.

Flattery will get you everywhere.

If you do feel courageous enough to try out pick-up lines rather than a more rounded offering, the profile photo is a terrific starting point. Very few people on Earth are so full of themselves they won't respond to direct compliments. Think of how you'd feel if someone sent a message via the dating site's communication platform, telling you they love your hairstyle/eyes/complexion/dress sense or whatever.

If you use her portrait as your inspiration, you'll get brownie points for a) noticing her in the first place amongst the scores of similar personals you've undoubtedly been scanning through; b) being sufficiently impressed to have decided to get in touch; and c) having taken the time to praise a particular feature.

Obviously, the content of this line would be entirely dependent on the actual profile image, but it could be something akin to, "Your bobbed hairstyle just drew my attention to your wonderful face and sparkling smile. I felt compelled to get in touch." Or, "I absolutely love the expression in your profile picture. You somehow seem to blend sophistication, sensuality, and shyness, all at once. (Extra points for the alliteration!) I just had to get in touch to find out more about this captivating person."

Simply listing potential pick-up lines would be counter-productive because most of them are hackneyed, and the woman in question may well have heard them all before. But with a bit of thought, you can transform a silver tongue into engaging text.
