Getting Your Place and Your Look Ready for a Date: A Guy’s Guide

Here is how you make a date happen at your place.

Whether you’re just getting to know someone exciting or are deeply in love with someone you’ve been with for a long time, dates are really important. Setting aside time to get to know each other and focus on the romance is key to any good relationship from the start, and it’s something that remains important, experts say.

Of course, not every date needs to be a big night out on the town. On the contrary, a date night in your own home can be a wonderful thing—provided that you know how to pull it off.

You should be careful, though, because there’s a fine line between a cute night in and a lazy, low-effort cop-out that will leave your partner or would-be partner annoyed with your lack of effort and imagination.

Making a night in feel like a “real” date is all about presentation. How your space looks will determine how well it measures up to the fancy restaurant in town, and how you look will say a lot about how you feel about the person you’re spending time with.

Keep it clean!

If there’s one thing that will derail your date really fast, it’s a messy home. If there’s dirt, dust, and clutter everywhere in your space, then it’s not exactly going to scream “romance.” So make an effort! Dust, vacuum, and sweep your space. Put stuff away where it belongs, and try to organize the place a bit. Be sure to pay attention to the couches and chairs that you and your date might be sitting in, the tables you’ll eat at, and other key detail areas.

You should be cleaning your space regularly whether you’re dating or not, of course. But it’s especially important when you’re trying to win the affections of a wonderful woman, because experts say that messy living spaces can be a major dating turn-off.

Decor and Ambiance

If you want to have a great date, you need to set the scene. There’s a reason that stay-at-home “dates” are not always recommended by relationship experts. It’s because, so often, they don’t feel like dates. They just feel like sitting around at home.

But you can make your home feel a whole lot more like a special place to spend time if you make a little time to set the mood. Candles are a classic romantic choice, of course, and mood lighting can be wonderful if it’s not overdone.

You’ll want your room’s decor to feel right, too. That means no tacky posters—you should have left that immature stuff back in your college dorm room. Instead, invest in real decor that adults will respect. A quality canvas print from a service that specializes in canvas photo printing online, for instance, can be an excellent choice.

Dressing Well for a Date at Home

Want to know how to dress when your date is taking place in your home? It’s simple: Just dress as you would for a date that would happen outside of your own home!

In other words, dress nicely. Put on a decent shirt and pants. Of course, there’s no official dress code for your own house, so you can take your fashion in whatever direction you want to—throw on some dope rings, put on a hat, or dress up a casual pair of pants by going with a fancy shirt and shoes. But whatever you do, be sure to put care into your appearance. Don’t dress just for comfort, as you might if you were watching Netflix alone—if this date is going to feel right to both you and your partner, then you need to look the part.
