High School Sweetheart

Part 1

Most people dream about having a high school sweetheart and one day marrying them. As an adolescent, I never thought I was pretty or popular enough to achieve this goal until my sophomore year of high school when I met Tim. He wasn't a jock or anything but compared to me he was very popular. We shared a mutual friend and one day I confided in her that I was crushing on Tim. She ran and told him and he laughed and replied that he likes girls with a little meat on their bones. I wasn't too shocked, it has been what I have heard from everyone all my life. I took with a grain of salt and pushed Tim out of my mind.

A few weeks pass and a couple of friends of mine invite me to the local fair. At this time I was dating Tony. He was unpopular like me, somewhat of a nerd but he was a senior and that gave me a little props at school. I didn't have feelings for Tony as I did for Tim but I was lonely so I took what I could get. Now you would think that Tony would want to take his girlfriend to the fair but he was apparently so busy with his senior life that he didn't have time to hang out with me outside of school.

So at the fair, my friends and I jump on this ferris wheel and survey all the flashing lights and people below us. Suddenly my friend shouts "Hey isn't that Tim?!" My eyes lock on the figure below me and try to see if her statement is true. Do my eyes deceive me? Am I really looking at the man I've been crushing on for weeks now? Should I talk to him? My mind raced a mile a minute. When I got off the ferris wheel I realized that what I was seeing was true. There stood Tim, alongside a girl from school that I knew. This is perfect, I thought, I'll walk over to them and just act like I came over to say hi to her and see if he says anything. My heart is pounding out of my chest as the words "Hey Jane" come out of my mouth. I'm shocked as she says hello to me and so does Tim.

Jane explains to me that they were waiting in line for this ride that she was too afraid to go on because it spins so fast. I, like Jane, am afraid of rides like that as well. "Since your here," she continues "Tim still needs a partner why don't you ride with him?" At this moment my heart pounded even harder. I knew that I would never have the courage to ride this ride but with Tim standing there I felt like anything was worth it just to spend a little time with him. So I quickly agree and before I knew it we were stepping on the ride together. The ride operator strapped us in our seats and the ride began to spin. I surprised myself when a huge grin appeared on my face. All my fears subsided as I watched Tim in the seat next to me.

All of a sudden Tim reached over and grabbed my hand and interlocked his fingers in mine. Could this really be happening? Is Tim actually holding my hand right now? That was the happiest I had felt in as long as I could remember. He held my hand for the entire ride. When the ride was over and we got off he didn't go his separate way like I expected. He walked with me around the fair just talking about school and friends and whatever came to mind. He stopped at a merry-go-round and I heard him say, "Isn't she so cute?" for a second I thought he was complimenting another girl and it kind of got me a little sad but then this little child ran into his arms and hugged him. "Cheyenne, this is my little sister," I smiled a said hello to her. A few minutes later a young boy approaches and says to Tim that Dad is waiting for us and to hurry up. Tim hands him his sister and tells them both to go wait in the car and he'll be there soon. His brother pauses before leaving a looks at me for a long minute before replying "Oooooo you like her!"

I quickly shook my head no but Tim didn't reply he just repeated to them to go wait in the car. Once they were out of sight he turned to me and told me that he had a fun night with me and leaned in a gave me a long hug. I watched him walk away and disappear into the night as I uncontrollably grinned from ear to ear. Thinking about our future together and what it would be like seeing his tomorrow at school.
