How to Handle Your Long Distance Relationship

10 Steps to Keeping Your Love Intact

1. Don’t stress about your relationship.

This is step number one because it is one of the most important. Stress is not ideal in any situation, and this one is no different. If you're overly-stressed about it, try to do stress relieving exercises—I recommend yoga.

2. Take it one day at a time.

Only focus on what you have to do today. Time will go by fast, and before you know it, you’ll be with your love again. If you cannot focus on the day, make a list of stuff you need to do and do it. Your mind will be off of your partner, which will make it easier to cope.

3. You don’t know when you are going to be with them again?

If you love them, you won’t stress over the ifs and focus on how & what can I do? For example: How can I see him/her again? What can I do to make this relationship easier on them and myself?

4. If you’re having a difficult time coping with your relationship, a pros and cons list could work for you.

Pro: I’ll see them again.

Con: it might take a while.

Pro: it’s worth it.

If the cons outweigh the pros, you might want to evaluate your situation. The pros/cons might come close. In this case, you should have a conversation with your partner, letting them know how you’re feeling. His/her insight will make your decision a lot easier.

5. You don’t trust your significant other?

Sure, it was easier watching them when y'all were together, but if it’s truly love, then you’ll trust your partner, regardless of the distance. Ultimatums suck. Don’t tell them, “if you love me, you’ll let me have your passwords.” A relationship needs to be based off of trust and if your partner has done stuff in the past to make you believe they are not faithful, let them know. If they blow off your feelings as you being paranoid, they do not deserve you, anyway.

6. Y'all are too busy for online communication?

Set a designated time you and they are both free once a night, and discuss your day. You have to keep in mind that they left for a reason, so they are going to be busy. It could be work-related or family-related, but they will most likely have something to do. If you cannot find time out of your day, then maybe they aren't as important as you thought they were.

7. Keep your sex life alive.

If you and your significant other had a sex life before the separation, try to make time for online erotic stuff for each other. For example, sexy pictures, video sex, or simply just dirty talk. Cutting out the intimacy in your relationship will likely cause the relationship to fall short or become boring.

8. Make them feel important.

This is an important one! If you’re not making your partner feel like they matter to you, this relationship will not last long. Take time out of your day to let them know that you care. Even a simple "I love you" text goes a long way.

9. Trying to keep your relationship dragging longer than you should.

If you can't do a long distance relationship, let the other person know! Don’t keep leading them on if you do not think it is going to work out! This will only cause added stress, and the longer you wait to confess your feelings, the more it will hurt your significant other.

10. Remember that you can do it.

Long distance relationships are not easy. If you have the mindset that it’s going to fail, then it will fail. Keep in mind that you love them and are willing to try, but don’t end your social life to pay attention to them.
