I'm Engaged at 18

And that's okay.

One cold afternoon in Seattle, Washington I was swiping through Tinder. My best friend had just made me upload it and we were looking at all the cute guys, reading the bios, and talking with some of the guys. This was how she had met most of the people she knew after moving from New Jersey.

I came across a photo of a man named Darren who was 20 years old. He was super cute looking, and honestly, I had only swiped right because of the one picture of the adorable puppy he had sitting on his lap in the last photo. It might have possibly been the many shirtless pictures that he had on his account, too.

We exchanged a few days worth of messages before I gave him my number. Every morning I’d wake up to a message saying “good morning beautiful” or “good morning I hope you have a good day.” Every single day. It was something sweet from one of the most attentive people I have ever met. We messaged back and forth like that for about a week before deciding to meet up and go for a hike.

We agreed to meet at the trailhead and he would text me when he got there. Obviously, we didn’t have cell service when we got to the trailhead, but recognized each other right away. I was really excited, and also extremely nervous, seeing as I was meeting a complete stranger and had never used Tinder before in my life, and was praying to god that I didn’t make a fool of myself. As I got ready the morning of the hike, I threw on my favorite hiking pants that made my butt look absolutely amazing, trying to look my best for hiking. For hiking! I’m not even going to try and figure out what was going through my head. Putting on makeup and getting dressed all cute. But I still did. I proceeded to text my best friend before I left and tell her how nervous I was, but she told me that everything would be just fine.

The hike went great. We had to hike an extra 10 miles simply due to the fact that part of the road was closed for the winter. I ended up spraining both my ankles and watched Darren trip on just about every single rock. Afterward, because we were so cold, we decided coffee and pancakes from the nearest Denny's sounded phenomenal. So we headed over and sat and talked and laughed until we noticed it was late and we should probably start heading home. He walked me out to my car and gave me the most awkward side hug I have ever received. Whenever we talk about that first date, he tells me he had the biggest grin on his face on the way home that night.

Only a few days later, I went to base (as he's in the military) and brought him Carl's Junior. Can you believe that before that day he had never before had a burger from Carl's Junior? We ended up standing outside our cars for two hours just talking about nothing in particular.

From that day forward, we've spent every single day together. Every. Single. Day. Even when we both had to work, we would still spend the morning and night together.

Life has honestly never been better. Darren isn’t just my fiancée, he’s also my best friend. The man who helps me get through each and every day. And I’m engaged at 18, but that’s okay with me.
