It appeared as if Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were still trying to solve their well-known marital difficulties earlier this year — with Affleck making a public statement last month about his struggle with alcohol abuse and how it affected his family — but sadly the couple has filed for divorce.
'Irreconcilable Differences'
Garner previously announced her intent to divorce Affleck back in 2015, but the couple decided to work on their marriage. On Thursday, however, the couple requested to dissolve their marriage. Fortunately, they're settling the divorce amicably and with their kids in mind.
The initial report indicates that both Affleck and Garner filed for divorce without the use of a lawyer. Their cause of "irreconcilable differences" means neither side is responsible for causing the separation. The report also reads that they'll file for joint custody of their three children.
The Couple Did Not Sign A Prenup
All of the income Affleck and Garner amassed since their wedding will be split up, possibly 50/50, although Affleck has had a far more lucrative decade between his directing career and playing Batman in the DCEU; his next appearance is in Justice League, which premieres on November 14, 2017. (However, according to TMZ, part of the original cause for their split was Ben's penchant for gambling; he's reportedly banned from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas for counting cards.)
Whatever agreement they come to when splitting up assets, neither side will be left empty-handed.
Still, the news of Affleck and Garner's separation is unfortunate to hear. Most fans of both celebrities assumed that progress was being made in saving their marriage, which began in 2005 after the couple starred together in 2003's Daredevil.
There is no news yet on whether this decision will affect production of either actor's upcoming projects, including Amusement Park for Garner and The Batman for Affleck.
