“Just listen” by Angeliz Bruno October 18,2018

It’s easy for some to just get carried on in a conversation. As they continue to talk, you notice that the person listening is nodding their heads or saying “uh ha.” But then that annoying thing happens when the conversation turns deep and the person pulls out their phone when you’re trying to tell them something important... I’ve been guilty of that.

With technology taking over how we communicate with each other, it’s becoming more difficult for millennials to learn how to listen in a verberal communication. Some may disagree and that’s okay, we’re all entitled to opinions. Not agreeing on an opinion any how, can cause the listener to not engage in a conversation causing them to not listen to their best friends or loved ones. We all crave attention and when the attention is not on ourselves we tend to not listen or pay attention to others.

Here is a list of a few reasons why you should listen to those talking to you:

  • Better chances of saving a life.
  • Making loved ones feel accepted.
  • Keeping longer relationships and friendships.

They chose you for a reason. Something about you made them realize that they can trust their personal lives with you. In the past, I faced depression and I remember trying to communicate my depression with a few friends but somehow some way, a text became more important or a twitter notification became more important than my tears. That made me not trust those few people but of course forgiveness came in time. However, not everyone who faces depression makes it through their depression to save others. A feeling of isolation can cause people to suicide if they do not get the help needed. You can save your friends and even families from depression or from other situations simply by listening to them. You can make someone’s day a bit brighter and easier just by listening to them.

Recognize the signs for help and please listen to your loved ones. I’ve been guilty of not listening to a few of my friends or “over talking” during a conversation. Give your listener the acknowledgement needed during the time of communication even gossip! You never know what juicy detail you might miss for not listening.

Now, I’m sure I can keep giving you a long article about the benefits of listening such as listening will encourage spouses to stay together longer but I’m not a relationship expert and I don’t want to bore you with a very long article, all you have to do is just listen. Try listening to why they’re talking to you. Are they okay? What is bothering them? Listen to your loved ones because simple conversation can lead to the bigger picture of the situation. This will definitely come in handy in relationships, interviews, your job and of course at home. I have lost friends and even got lost in touch with families for not listening to them when they really needed me. Now I’m telling you to not make the same mistake I did in my past... all you have to do is just listen!
