Living in a Tiny House

Moving into a tiny house was the biggest - and best -decision I ever made. Here's why.

Moving into a tiny house isn't for everyone; but it is for us. My wife and I chose to embark on this journey because the area we were living in was quite crowded, and many of our neighbors - always in close proximity - were often rude. We were ready to move out of that apartment complex. When asked about being sure of my decision to move in to a new house, I did not hesitate and proceeded to pack up my things. The excitement of finally having a space of our own powered us through moving and getting rid of a bunch of furniture and items that were not going to fit.

We had to squeeze in not only ourselves but our two cats and two mini dachshunds into the space.

One family. One tiny house.

All That Matters

Upon first seeing the house, it looked smaller from the outside than it actually was on the inside. Sometimes tiny houses can be surprising. The dogs trumped my own excitement, though: it was glorious watching their flopping ears go up and down as they ran around their first yard – our first yard too.

Upon entering through the front door, my line of vision was greeted by the back door. This is a cute quirk that I would come to love. With one kitchen, two bedrooms, a small living space, and one bathroom (all on one floor), my tiny house was now a home, filled with my family.

It doesn't feel small - contrary to what everyone might think. We have high ceilings (a major advantage) and creative minds. With a little paint, hard work, and personal trinkets, we made our tiny home our own.

You don't have to spend much money fixing up a tiny home. Would I want to live in a big home right now? God no. I'd rather fix up the little space I have than spend more time planning to fix a house with never-ending corridors.

Benefits of Living in a Tiny House

  • Affordable
  • Space saving (I definitely won't become a hoarder in this amount of space)
  • Heating costs lower (if properly insulated)
  • Easy cleaning
  • Quality family time

I don't need to buy big furniture, I don't need to buy anything that aren't essentials, and I don't need to stress about living outside of my means. Maybe, just maybe, a splurge would be nice (hello, outdoor deck!) but except for that, I'm happy. I have quality time, in a cozy place to call home, with my wife, and our growing family.

Plus, it's fun having to force to team up to choose one television show to watch on our one tv and on our one couch.

And did I mention that my tiny house has a big yard?

Mowing is, fun?

Even though we spend most of the time together (occasionally splitting up via the two rooms), we did not fight as I was expecting. We both know there is no place to run, so we have to deal with our problems quickly. I believe living in this space has made me learn so much more about my wife and her interesting quirks. If I find myself thinking I need to get away for a moment, I step outside, sit on the deck, and take in the elements surrounding me.

My tiny house is surrounded by a peaceful quietness, and it's great for meditation. Leaving my apartment and moving into a tiny house was one of the best decisions of my adult life so far. It's affordable, it's fun, and it brings you together with the ones that you love.

Who knows, maybe we'll have a tiny kid next?
