Look Into My Eyes and Tell Me That You Love Me
Love is irrevocable, a thing of the soul.
Don't text it. Don't Tweet it. Don't shout it out as a Facebook status with eleven hashtags. Love has become a word and an emotion we throw about carelessly. Flippantly.
I don't want you to just gaze at your gadget while whispering those very important words, trying to contain in your fingertips what spills out from your heart. I don't want to be staring at those words as they flash in a cold, impersonal way on the screen.
It is not a moment that Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or Snapchat is worthy of capturing. Simply because they will never grasp what those words mean to me...to you...to us.
You see, love is not cold. Not impersonal. Not unfeeling. Love is not a hurried smattering of words across a smartphone because you are afraid of the emotions that will flit across my face when you say what you feel, afraid to know if I feel the same way too. Love is that fear that makes your heart beat faster as you wait for my response. It is passionate, a wave crashing on the shores of your soul. It is irrevocable, like a letter sent through post, a rock that you have dropped into the middle of the deepest part of the ocean.
And I want to feel that. I want you to be looking at me. I want to feel your hesitation and strengthening determination. I want to hear the inflection in your voice, see the tenderness in your eyes as they rise to meet mine briefly before you look away, half-embarrassed, half-eager. Let me hear the words from the depths of your soul—words that you have longed to say, words that I have longed to hear.
I want to feel your hand tremble with uncertainty, feel the press of your palm against mine, a pressure that tells me you mean every single word...and more. Who cares if our palms our sweaty or the coffee is growing cold? Who cares if the rain has stopped or the snow is falling harder?
I want you to see the thrill in my eyes, the blush in my cheeks. The joy, the honour of what it means to be loved by you. I want you to see the reflection of your love and your heart, mirrored in my eyes, especially if (and I know they will) words fail me.
I want you to look into my eyes and see that I love you too.
