Love

The Concept

Human beings are the only species who are capable of giving and receiving this “wonderful” thing we know as love. I put wonderful in quotations because some would describe it totally different. I think we can all agree that love makes one do absurd things. Love is a scary thing, it can be so powerful. If you truly love someone, you’ll go through the depths of hell for them, let the flames ignite your skin. More people commit murder out of deep compassion than pure hatred. We let this thing we call love have a hold on us for what? Lots of human beings are convinced that if you’re not in a relationship, you’re not fulfilled, that if you don’t have a significant other, you can’t possibly be the happiest you can be. Let me tell you this though, you can be alone & not be lonely. If we look at the statistics, more than half of marriages fail and end in divorce. The average marriage only last 13.7 years, while the average life expectancy is 82.2 years. You're supposed to get married & live happily ever after no? Be together forever? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not shaming love or marriage but I do think that lots of people today have made these misconceptions about love. This has a lot to do with admiration and lust, they have a big impact on love. There’s for sure a difference between being in love & having love for someone. But this word love is thrown around like it’s nothing. It’s lost its true meaning. Some believe in love at first sight, I think it’s impossible. That just means you’re attracted to the way they carry themselves. You haven’t loved someone till you’ve witnessed their darkness, entered & traveled around their psyche, and accepted them for who they truly are, with open arms. You have to embrace their flaws, not run from them. When somebody has love for you, it is so apparent. In their words, in their gestures, in their actions—it is obvious. It’s so hard to explain love, it’s just something we feel in every inch of our body, the butterflies in your stomach, something that fills up your heart. We all have our own definitions of love though. The way we perceive love has lots to do with the way we’ve seen love. Our perspective of love changes based on our experiences in life. You love & your learn. You could be with a person for a week & be infatuated, give them your all. You could also be with a person for years & there could never be any genuine love. It’s all about the vibe & connection you feel with someone. I truly believe that everyone has a soulmate, there’s at least one human that your soul is connected to, you were undoubtedly put on this universe to be with that person. I find it’s very rare we end up with that person due to wrong timing or never meeting them.

But someone wise once told me, “If it’s really meant to be, it’ll be.” It always stuck in my head. I tend to try & always remind myself that everything happens for a reason. I grew up believing that, not this fairytale love that we see in movies and shows. Happily ever after occasionally exists.

It’s important to remember that you can’t control people’s intentions or behaviour. So fall in love with someone who understands you, someone who will be your backbone & guide you. Someone who will stick around for the madness. Fall in love with someone who makes it obvious how madly in love they are with you, not someone who makes you question their feelings. I’ve learned that how someone treats you is how they feel about you, if someone acts like they most likely don’t care, they don't. Most importantly, don’t fall in love with a body or a face or even the idea of being in love. Fall in love with their mind & their soul & love them for everything they are. Don’t let love have a hold over your mind, don’t let it destroy you.
