Love Can Hurt

A Short Love Story

I watched him kiss her. My heart fell as the reality sank in. He was done with me. I couldn't watch anymore. I turned around looking for Mila.

"Mila?" I wondered where she ran off to. That's Mila for you. We've been best friends since grade school and she still managed to pull these escapes on me. I checked my phone to see if she texted me. No such luck.

"Boo! Haha! Gotcha! You should've seen the look on your face!" Mila hugged me, but I pushed her away. "You look upset, Em. What happened? Is it because I disappeared? Gosh I'm sorry. I really needed to-"

"Jake is here with some girl. And he kissed her." I held back my tears, and welcomed Mila's hug this time.

"I'm sorry, Em, that sucks. I don't know what to tell you. He doesn't deserve you."

Mila offered to take me home, and I was more than happy to leave this party. Truth is I've never liked to party. But when I met Jake he dragged me to all sorts of parties. I sort of got used to the party life.

"Thanks, Mila. Sorry for making you leave early." I shut the car door with a heavy feeling. I couldn't carry on like this much longer. It's been more than two months since Jake broke up with me. I guess that when you date someone for almost two years you don't expect it to end. Oh well.

I rubbed my eyes and sat up. I looked over at my phone. 2:22 A.M. Weird. I wonder what woke me up. Then I heard a bang. It was coming from outside. I grabbed my phone and staggered over to my window. What in the world was Jake doing in the driveway?

I padded down the stairs, tying my robe and straightening my hair. I opened the door ad stepped outside. "Jake?" I didn't see him in my driveway. Strange. It was hard to believe that I had imagined that. I turned to go back inside, and that's when I saw it.

***

I opened my eyes. Then shut them again really fast. What are all these bright lights? I heard some voices that I didn't recognize. "Hello? Can you hear me?" I opened my eyes a tiny drop and saw a man leaning over me. Was I in the hospital? I was trying to remember what happened. But I kept drawing a blank.

I looked at the man standing over me, "Can you tell me where I am?" He looked at me funny. "Doctor?" Was that shock in his eyes? I was more confused now than before.

"Emily, I'm not the doctor... I'm your Dad." Now it was my turn to be shocked. My name is Emily? That's my dad? I saw this man whisper something to a nice looking lady. Maybe she could help me.

"Ma'am?" She looked at me and smiled. Okay good. At least she doesn't think I'm crazy.

"Can you tell me where I am?"

"You're in the hospital. You were in a coma for the past three weeks. You were in a really bad accident. When you got here the doctors were not sure you would survive. It's a true miracle that you are awake right now."

Wow. That was a lot to take in. I was in a coma? Hold on. Who am I? I'll ask that nice lady. Where did she go? Well I guess I could ask that guy again.

"Do you remember anything?" The investigator looked at me through his funny glasses.

"No, now can I go? My head hurts." I was tired and wanted to get back to bed.

"Just a few more pictures if you don't mind." He pulled out an envelope.

I sighed. Did I have a choice? He showed me a picture of a guy and a girl. Nothing rang a bell. Then he showed me a picture of a house. I was about to tell him that I couldn't remember anything, when suddenly, I saw it.

I looked around the room one more time. I couldn't believe I spent a full three months in this hospital room. I took a deep breath and turned to Mila and smiled. "I'm ready. Let's get out of here!" We headed down the long hospital corridors. I was so looking forward to that first breath of fresh air.

"Em. Can I tell you something? I think you're really brave. I was so scared I had lost you. It was amazing to see how you pushed yourself and got to where you are today."

Was that a tear I saw rolling down Mila's cheek? It must've been hard on her.

It was only a year later that I could talk about what had happened. I stood on the stage, holding the microphone with sweaty hands. I breathed in and began.

"My name is Emily Morgan and I am a survivor. I was hit in a horrible accident. I was in a coma for almost a month after. When I awoke, I didn't remember a thing. Not my name, not my parents, and definitely not what happened. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I got my memory back, and with it so much life."

I looked around the room. There was one face in particular I was looking for.

"About two months before the accident, I went through a break-up. The person driving the car was the same person I had dated for two years. His name is Jake. You're probably thinking that things must have ended really bad. But no, it wasn't an intentional crash. Here's what happened. A few months after the break up, I woke up in middle of the night to sounds from outside. When I went down and didn't hear anything, I was going to head back to bed. But that's when I saw it."

I paused here. Mila gave me a supportive smile. I felt like I couldn't do it. But I needed to.

"I saw a knife stabbed into the tree near my house. I was confused since I've never seen it there before. I walked over to the tree and tried to pull it out. That was the last thing I remember before the accident. Turns out that someone was trying to break into my house. And Jake happened to be passing by. He scared the guy off, who stuck his knife in the tree as he ran. Jake went back in his car. And when he saw me going for the knife, he thought it was the guy. And well, I'm sure you can figure out the rest."

Just then the doors opened and I saw him. He was in a wheelchair. But it was still Jake.

"And you may wonder if I'm angry at him. The answer is no. He risked his life to save mine. And that, well, it's true love."
