So You Wanna Talk About Awkward

The Completely Mortifying Story of My First Kiss

To understand this story there is a small list of things you need to know first.

1. Emma is the best friend I have ever had, she really is a blessing no matter how odd she sounds in this story.

2. John has been in love with Emma for a very long time and I, being a self-declared cupid, had been trying to get them together for the past two years.

3. In this quest I ended up joining forces with John's best friend, Logan.

4. Logan and I had developed a forbidden chemistry. He was spoken for.

5. And finally, I was the token single, innocent, good girl

When I was 16-years-old. my older brother decided to move from our small Alberta town to Vancouver and Emma had come to stay with me while my parents helped him move. Being 16 and easily pressured, I had been convinced that having the boys over for the evening was the perfect way to take Emma and John from timidly flirtatious to, well couple. Logan, though, had another plan intertwined into mine.

To begin with, the night seemed to be going completely as I had imagined. We played sociables, my drinking game of choice, laughed and the two of them could barely keep from ripping each others clothes off, so when Logan started touching my thigh under the table and sending me glances I convinced myself it was harmless, as to not ruin the mood between the two lovebirds and because secretly I didn't want it to stop.

He got more and more daring as the night went on, including conversations about his "feelings" for me that were basically everything I wanted to hear and quite a few failed attempts at trying to get me to kiss him. That is where the situation becomes completely laughable.

We had migrated to the basement when Emma and John decided to head outside to "look at the stars" which was clearly code for make out on the patio furniture, while Logan and I laid on the couch with Texas Chainsaw Massacre playing on the TV. As I laid facing away from Logan doing my absolute best to fake watch the movie, he tried to convince me to roll over, making promises that he would not try to kiss me. Eventually I caved, at which point he did, of course, try to kiss me and I, being said token good girl and not handling the fact that he was spoken for well, panicked and tried to roll back away; meaning his lips latched onto the corner of my mouth and the majority of my cheek in an incredibly wet and slobbery manner as I realized Emma and John were watching the two of us through the gap in the curtains with the cheesiest smiles I had ever seen and a girl was being chopped up incredibly dramatically on that crappy box TV in the corner of the room.

Next time you think about your braces locking together just remember we can be in the boat together, as you head to the dentist, I will sit and think about how someone I lied to my parents, he lied to the girl that he continued to date for another year and a half as I watched them be together and know it was a strange secret we would all have to keep, along with the fact that my feelings for him would certainly not go away nearly as easily as his seemed to.

Oh and pro tip, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not a very good romantic movie.
