Story 1: The One With Prom
My senior year of high school was my favorite year of high school. Though it was a year full of anxiety because of final report cards, college applications, and fear of the future, it was also a year full of fun, laughter, and freedom (to a certain extent). I grew closer to my friends and nostalgic because of everything that was ending.
I was never much of a dance person; I never went to the Homecoming dances or Sadie Hawkins (Dance in which the girls ask the boys). Prom was a must, though. I'd be lying if I said that my friends and I didn't expect to get asked to our senior prom (especially considering that we'd never been asked to any other dance, we wanted that experience for at least one of them). Honestly, I'm 85 percent sure every girl in high school wants to get asked to a dance at least once.
I had three very best friends in my high school: Emily, Ashley, and Dayra. It is still a mystery as to why 2/3 of them didn't get asked to Prom, considering how great they are. I didn't get asked either. When Ashley and I realized that no one was going to ask us, we decided to take matters into our own hands (the hand of Dayra's boyfriends friends, actually). Dayra wanted to ask her boyfriend to our prom (they went to two different schools) at Six Flags. I decided to ask her boyfriends best friend (who I had met half a year before) at the same time as Dayra.
My other best friend (who went to a different school; boy, this is getting complicated), Aurora, made the poster. It read "Prom would be SUPER, we just need a MAN." We'd planned to pull the poster out in front of the Superman ride.
The sunny spring break day finally came and we were all set to ask the guys. I was so nervous, my hands were shaking. Though Dayra knew her boyfriend would say yes, she was also nervous. We pretended to be in a race (to avoid drawing any suspicion as to why we were running up the hill) all the way to the Superman Ride. There, we took the poster out of the backpack and waited for the guys to come down.
You've gotta admit, that is pretty cool. They said yes. (Big surprise)
Prom was only two to three weeks away. A couple of days after I asked him, I texted him asking for his basic info so that I would be able to fill out the guest pass for my school's prom. He never texted back.
Dayra's boyfriend filled it three days after she asked. I started to worry, but let it slide.
The deadline for the guest pass was getting close and I continued to text him explaining the urgency. He never replied. I told Dayra to tell her boyfriend to tell him (this kinda sounds like those scenes where Luis from Ant-Man is telling a story). Apparently, he knew but he just didn't want to go with me anymore.
He never had the pelotas to tell me himself. My high school self over-thought that whole situation big time. I immaturely felt so unwanted; like, am I really that horrible of a person that he didn't have the decency to even lie about being sick or something?
My friends and I ended up having a great time. We went in a limo, ate a ton of ice cream at the dance, spun until we got dizzy, and went to Denny's right after. The 2 AM Denny's trip will always be a highlight of that night. We laughed, drank milkshakes, and ate lots of fries. Life stood still for a bit in that Denny's.
