That One Night

Hannah sat up in her bed drenched in a pool of sweat. The dream came again. She tried blocking it out, but those eyes stared back at her all throughout the night. For the past week she had dreamt of a twenty-year old boy with the brightest blue eyes she had ever seen. There was no doubt the dream meant something.

Her roommate, Polly, was in the bed across the room snoring loudly. Polly crawled into her bed around three in the morning after a night of partying. She slammed into the door when she was fumbling to find her keys the night before, which scared her until she realized what was happening. She looked at her with a small laugh, hoping not to wake her friend. Polly was the exact opposite of Hannah. She had long, curly blonde hair with emerald eyes, whereas Hannah had long auburn hair with chestnut colored eyes. Everyone in school called them the twins.

They met their freshman year at Texas State University. Hannah was from the sunshine state, Florida, and Polly was born and raised in Texas. Even though they had similar personalities, Polly was the exact opposite of Hannah. Polly was loud, loved to party, and was very extroverted. Hannah loved staying in, was quite, shy, and enjoyed nights in with a good book.

“Morning sunshine,” Hannah laughed. Polly raised her arms above her head and smiled.

“What the hell Han? What time is it?” Polly asked.

“Half past eight, Polly, so I’m guessing you’ve been asleep for three hours?” Hannah teased. A pillow soared across the room hoping to connect with Hannah’s face. She laughed hard at this and tossed it back.

“It’s not my fault you stay out all night getting drunk and partying with random boys that we go to school with, Polly,” Hannah shrugged. It really wasn’t, she thought. Polly did mix herself up with random people all the time. Thankfully, they had a ‘don’t bring rando’s back to the dorm’ agreement. She had never broken the rule, but Polly always attempted to. As long as they never did anything on her bed, she would be okay with it.

“Come on Han,” Polly pleaded. “Come out with us! It’ll be so much fun! Wear that cute dress you’ve been dying to put on and get all dolled up. We’re going to that party over on Marshall’s Creek. It’s going to be awesome!” Hannah rolled her eyes. Parties at Marshall Creek always ended up with the cops breaking the party up too early, which led them to having a lame house party. That was the last thing she wanted tonight.

“I have plans tonight. I can’t go. I have those videos to watch, a paper to write, and so much studying to do,” Hannah truthfully replied. She nodded to herself. She did have a lot of homework to do, so it wasn’t necessarily a lie.

“You’re wasting your college experience. Just come with us and hang out for a couple of hours and I won’t bug you again. You’re turning into an old woman right before our very eyes.” Polly said matter of factly.

Hannah rolled her eyes. Her friend might be right. She wasn’t enjoying college the way so many others were. If she didn’t want to drink, she wouldn’t have to. “Alright, fine. A couple of hours and then I come home and you do not argue with my decision. Deal?” Hannah got up and stuck out her hand.

“Fine I’ll agree, but you have to wear that sexy, little, black dress and heels. Also, it’s a house party, but fancy!” Polly exclaimed knowing Hannah would probably decline now.

“Polly! I am not going straight to a house party! Especially not in my little black dress! I’ll look slutty!” Hannah roared.

“No, no you won’t. We’ll do our hair and make up and look classy. I’ll help you and it will be fantastic!” Polly smiled reassuringly. “Plus it’s a black tie event, so it’s mandatory,” she continued. Hannah nodded in agreement with her friend. She sent her a nervous look, grabbed her pink shower caddy, and headed to the bathroom.

Hannah spent the remainder of the day in the library working on assignments and studying. She was mentally exhausted by the time came to head back and get ready with Polly. The door was opened to her room and vanilla fragrance soaked the air. It smelled heavenly, but too much was used. “Polly, this is a choking hazard!” Hannah said couching between syllables.

“Don’t you worry Han! We’re going to be da belle of da ball!” she said, winking at her friend. Hannah rolled her eyes at The Office reference. Polly always knew how to cheer her up.

They spent the next hour choosing outfit and shoe combinations that worked well together, doing each other’s make up, and spraying their hair just the right way. “Being a girl is hard, Pol. Are you sure we can’t just hang out here in our sweats tonight?” Hannah pleaded.

“Oh heck no, we can’t stay home in our sweats tonight! We need to go show off how hot we look!” Polly exclaimed. She smiled at her friend's sweet words.

“Alright, alright, let’s go before I change my mind. Are you sure I look okay?” Hannah questioned. “Girl, if I were into girls I’d be all over you! You look fine!” she dragged out. Hannah grabbed her wallet and rolled her eyes. She loved Polly dearly and hoped tonight wouldn’t be such a huge waste.

They finally made their way to the house and were greeted by two of their male friends, Josh and Matt. They were about as similar in looks as Hannah and Polly. Matt was taller with black hair and hazel eyes, whereas Josh was a bit shorter with blonde hair and brown eyes. They were two of the funniest guys on campus and they knew it.

“Hey PollWoll!” Josh exclaimed as he waved.

“Oh my, is that Hannah in person? What have we done to earn this great honor?” Matt chimed in. Both of the boys laughed as Hannah rolled her eyes.

“Oh very funny you two, I do come out from time to time. You guys make it seem like I’m always held up in my room avoiding everyone.” Hannah said with a frown.

“Or you’re in the library,” Matt finished for Hannah. “Oh it’s just in good fun. We just miss you is all,” he continued and wrapped an arm around her shoulder.

“Mhm, sure you do, Matty. Plus, I hear you guys every weekend when you bring dear Polly home. I just pretend to stay asleep, but you guys are always way too loud.” Hannah teased sticking her tongue out at Polly.

“Oh, whatever! We’re here to have fun tonight. Enough talk about all that other nonsense that doesn’t include me getting drunk and making out with some hot frat boy!” Polly cheered. Hannah loved that her friend was so full of life.

They made their way through the double doors into the two-story home. It reeked of beer and bad decisions. Hannah made a face that only Josh caught. “It’ll be fine, girl. Let’s go grab a drink,” he nudged her. Dance music blasted throughout the house and a bunch of college students were gyrating against one another. Matt handed Hannah a red solo cup and she took a big swig. She hated the taste of beer along with the smell of it. She sighed and finished the remaining contents of the cup.

“Atta girl!” Matt shouted and refilled her cup.

Hannah looked around the room to see who was there. She recognized almost everyone either from class, campus, the dorms, or the library. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the prettiest blue eyes. She turned her head a hard right and tried to see who they belonged to, but noticed they were already gone. With a deep sigh, she took a deep swig of her new beer and bopped to the music.

After twenty minutes or so of listening to Matt and Josh talk about basketball and whatever other sports they could think of, Hannah searched for Polly. There was long, blonde hair blowing near the doorway accompanied with a tight, short, pink dress. There was Polly making out with a boy, Danny, who was in her English class. Hannah sighed to herself and decided she needed some fresh air.

Cool air instantly hit her lungs and Hannah took a deep breath of it in. She stepped onto a beautiful, wooden deck that was accompanied by patio furniture, enclosed by wooded railing, and surrounded by woods. Most everyone from the party was inside avoiding the cold. Hannah thought it was much better here than it ever would be inside.

“Came out to get some fresh air too, huh?” A deep male voice said from the left of her. A tall, muscular, dark haired boy stood there in a leather jacket leaning up against the railing. Hannah stared at him from his feet working her way up until she met those beautiful blue eyes she saw moments ago. She gasped in shock and recognized those beautiful, blue eyes. They were the ones from her dreams.

“I, uh, I’ve been seeing you everywhere it seems,” Hannah stuttered.

“Everywhere? I think I would remember seeing you around a lot,” the boy spoke.

“Yeah,” Hannah lied, “in the library, on campus, and other places.”

“Well, that doesn’t seem plausible since I live in Tennessee. Sounds like wishful thinking to me," he grinned. Hannah felt like she was unraveling and needed to control herself.

“Maybe I’ve mistaken you from someone? I’m sure it’s because you have a familiar face,” she suggested. He shrugged his shoulders and removed his jacket.

“Here take this jacket. You look like you’re freezing.” Hannah realized she was visibly shaking.

“Th-thank you for your jacket. I’m Hannah by the way,” she offered her hand from beneath the jacket.

“I’m Jake. It’s nice to meet you Hannah.”

They spoke for the next hour discussing each of their schools, majors, likes, dislikes, and anything else that came to mind. Hannah couldn’t believe how easy it as to speak to this complete stranger. Polly would be so proud of her, she thought. It was especially surprising since the last boy she dated was two years ago in high school, Travis Birkman; the only boy to ever break her heart or have it for that matter. Hannah pushed all thoughts of Travis out of her head and focused on Jake.

He had the prettiest eyes and greatest smile she had seen in person in a long time. She felt every time he looked over at her, he was undressing her with his eyes, which Hannah, surprisingly, didn’t mind. She moved away from the sliding glass doors and leaned against the railing looking out into the wooded area. “It’s beautiful out here, right?” she asked Jake. He nodded in agreement and came behind her. Jake placed an arm on each side of Hannah with his hands on the railing.

His body pressed slightly into hers and she felt a bulge hit her back. She’d only been with one guy. Even though it was multiple times, Hannah felt extremely nervous. Her inner nerd was having a complete meltdown. Jake gently moved a few strands of hair from her left ear. “I hope this is okay, darling. If it’s not just let me know, okay?” Jake whispered. Hannah nodded in agreement. Whatever this sexy stranger wanted was his, she decided.

She turned in his arms and looked into those beautiful blue eyes. “I’m so glad I came out. I was contemplating staying home tonight,” Hannah cooed. He smiled at that.

“I’m really glad you did, too.” They shyly smiled at each other slowly, unconsciously, moving closer to one another. Their lips touched and Hannah let out a sensual sigh. They pulled away; briefly, taking a few, short breaths.

Jake reached his hand up and took the back of Hannah’s neck and pulled her into him. They kissed hard and passionately for a short period of time. Hannah put a hand to Jake’s chest and smiled. “One minute, please. I desperately need to kick these shoes off. They’re killing my feet.” Hannah admitted. Jake smiled and grabbed one of the patio chairs for her to sit.

After a few silent moments Hannah rose out of the chair and met Jake face to face. They joined in kiss once more and began moving their hands over each others bodies. Hannah ran her fingers up and down his chest mesmerized by each new muscle she found that covered his body. He held onto the small of her back to keep her steady as they stood pressed together. How long it had been since they started, Hannah wondered. Her friends would come looking for her shortly and definitely congratulate her on the hunk she was playing tonsil hockey with. That made the night completely worth it to her.

Right on cue, the sliding glass door opened and a drunken Polly emerged onto the deck with Josh and Matt. “Hey bitch! We’ve been looking for you! Why are you out here all by your lonesome? It’s freezing, girl!” Polly shivered. Hannah turned to introduce them to Jake, but noticed she was alone on the deck. She desperately ran to the other side of the deck, down the steps, and searched the nearby area.

“What are you doing Hannah? Are you drunk?” Matt asked.

“No! I was out here making out with this gorgeous guy, Jake. He’s visiting here from Tennessee!” Hannah confessed.

Without yielding any results, Hannah gave up. She shrugged her shoulders and noticed the leather jacket. If a guy was going to stand her up, she would keep his jacket. Fair is fair, she thought. The guys helped Polly up and accompanied them back to their dorm. They stopped on their way to get the greasiest pizza the campus had to offer.

They made it back to their dorm room and found a small note taped to the door. Hannah took it off and read it aloud, “Hey darling, thanks for the fun night. I don’t think I’ve had so much fun. You looked beautiful and are such a catch. Stay humble and beautiful. P.S. the leather jacket is all yours. Love, Jake,” Hannah finished. Her eyes widened and she turned to the boys.

“I told you! I told you he was real!” Hannah cheered.

“Yeah but it’s creepy how he doesn’t even go here, but knows where your dorm is,” Josh replied. Hannah didn’t care; nothing would spoil her great feeling. She crawled into bed with warm thoughts of Jake and drifted off to sleep.
