The Countdown Complication

What if meeting your soulmate was scheduled?

Something that I’ve always wondered is why God makes us look for soulmates and true love. Why not put a timer on someone's wrist with a countdown to when they will meet the love of their life? I mean I guess that would be too easy then. But with something as serious as love, why not make it simple? I mean dating and first loves and heartbreak and all the complications that go along with it… it just makes everything so damn annoying. A timer in the wrist that then falls out once its job is done would be pretty damn fantastic. I mean, could you imagine it?

“1:23…1:22…1:21… oh God, it was so close, he could taste it. What would he do? What would he say? How would she like him? Could his timer be wrong? All his friends told him not to be nervous, but that was all he could be at this point. 45…44…43…Less than a minute before he would see her. Say something to her. Say anything to her. He supposed hi would be as good of a place to start as any. Maybe he could already see her? I mean he was on a busy corner in New York City. He wondered what she looked like. He wondered what she would think of him? 10…9…8…

He pulled off his glasses one more time to clean them one more time before she would meet him. But as he began to clean them, he heard someone trip behind him and the next thing he knew he was covered in coffee and on the ground with this girl on top of him. But not just any girl. His girl. The only one that would he would be with for the rest of his life. As she slowly looked down at her wrist, saw it said zero, and slowly looked up at him, she turned 50 different shades of embarrassed that he didn't even realize was possible.

"Well this will be one cute story for the kids when were older, huh?" was the only thing he could think to say as they laid there. But he knew she was the one when she laughed and buried her head into her chest again, covered in coffee and all.”

Damn, that was pretty adorable. It could use some work, but there are a lot of stories that could be told from this idea. It could take any twist that it wanted to. This was the cute one, but there could be…darker ones, per se.

“With under a minute to go, she waited anxiously to see the man that would await her and be with her for the rest of her life. She hoped he would like her outfit, she wore it today in hopes that it would make her stand out to whoever the man would be. A bright yellow sundress that barely made it to her knees with some white sandals to go with it. It was her favorite outfit. The only jewelry she was wearing was her grandmothers wedding band on a necklace. It was her favorite piece of jewelry she owned, and her good luck charm. She figured of all the days she needed some luck it was today. The timer was at 5…4…3…2…

But then she heard it. She heard the screech of tires, the thud, followed by a quick smack of something hitting concrete. She looked up from her wrist to see a man in a classic navy blue suit laying dead on the ground. He had just been hit by a car crossing the street. She looked back down at her wrist and began to cry. He wrist still said two. He was rushing over to meet her. As she approached the body laying in the street, she noticed something that she hadn't before. He had been carrying a bouquet of gerbera daisies. Her favorite flower. It simply wasn't fair ,she thought as she began to sob in the middle of the intersection.”

That was pretty depressing, but it could get worse. I mean, at least these two knew that someone out there was waiting for them.

"He was three shots of whiskey deep already, and he had only been off of work for about 15 minutes. He didn't care. Why should he? It wasn't like he had anyone back at his apartment waiting for him. He looked down at his wrist, and read the word that had been haunting him for years. Error. Why was he the outcast? Was there no one in the entire world who could or would even want to be with him forever?

He stumbled back into his apartment, angry, confused, and in need of answers. Everyone told him it must be a mistake, that someone was out there looking for him. But he knew it wasn't true. No one had ever seen this before, and it broke his heart every time he looked at it to think that he was unable to be loved by any other people in the way that people crave to be loved."
