The Kids Aren't Alright

Depression is not a battle, it is a never ending war.

Most people believe that depression is something that only affects women. How wrong they are. Men experience this as well. The only difference is that we choose to keep it to ourselves. Why? The answer is simple: we are afraid of looking weak. Not only are we afraid of looking weak in front of other guys or that spicy senorita we might have a crush on, but mostly to ourselves. Most of the men around my age (27) were raised to be strong and not show emotion. That's all fine and good and all, but where does all of the emotions go? They get bottled up and tossed in a closet. A closet can only hold so much before it explodes. This, of course, is a problem with women as well. It is more common with women because women are much more vocal with their issues.

People aren't meant to keep their emotions to themselves. It's just not healthy. THIS is the reason why kids are shooting schools up and doing things like the 'tide pod challenge'. It's not from a lack of sense, it is from what we are teaching our kids! They grow up watching all of this crap on TV or reading on the internet about how they aren't good enough. "Buy this product to have a bigger dick!" or "Buy this product to enhance your boob size!" This is screwing with children and how their brains are supposed to grow. It's like this: say you have a rock and water. Everyone knows that rocks are extremely hard and that water is extremely soft. If I told you to try and soften a rock with only water by running it under water for a few seconds, you'd say it is impossible. On the other hand, if I told you to place it under the water for ten plus years, that suddenly becomes very possible. When you have kids listening to people telling them they are not enough for ten plus years, this will have an effect on them and their personality. The way that people look at themselves will dictate how they will treat other people in the future. Self-image holds more power than what people think.

I've often found myself wondering why our previous generation didn't seem to have the issues we have now with our youth. I do have a few theories. Fifty years ago you never heard anyone shooting up a school or eating laundry detergent. People had much greater confidence back then. Very few people had televisions and reporting news had a different meaning back then. It hasn't been until recently that things have really gotten out of control. I remember when those cheesy male enhancement pill commercials wouldn't come on until well after midnight, now they show up during normal hours. I personally believe that the invention of social media has been the main reason for this. Social media has revolutionized the advertisement business. The ads are able to reach many more people.

People have just gotten to money hungry. Everything is about money. "How much money can we make in the shortest amount of time?" Sometimes I am almost ashamed to call myself a human. The things we do and have done and God forbid what we have yet to do. Our society is crumbling right beneath us and the ones who have the power to fix it are to busy rolling in piles of money feeling that it will be someone else's problem. I see it like this: When Hitler was parading around the world committing his unspeakable acts, he still remembered to plan for the future. To do this, he started the Nazi Youth program. He programmed the youth on the Nazi doctrine and look at it today... it is still around. Even the bible says, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." My point is: There is power in children. Our children are the future so, one could say: if you control the youth, you control the future. That is a disturbing observation, but it is the truth.

Children are sponges and soak up anything you place in front of them. Let's place things in front of them that won't plant these ideas of hatred among themselves and their peers. If you don't want to do it for you then do it for the future of the human race.
