The Prom

A Night to Remember

It was the last day of summer. School would begin bright and early come morning. Victoria couldn't wait. This year was going to be different. She was a junior and would be able to go to the prom. Last year she watched as the other juniors and seniors dressed up for their special night. This year it would be her turn.

Victoria was just an average girl. She didn't exactly see herself as the girl next door. She was, in her opinion, average. She stood 5'2" with long brown hair, green eyes, and full pouty lips. She was an average student, not the brightest but she wasn't dumb either. She wore her hair down and wore very little makeup.

Everyday was the same. Same classes with the same students. She had lunch with her friends discussing upcoming plans for the weekend.

Victoria had gotten a job at a local theater to help buy the extra things she wanted. She stayed busy with school and work. Before she knew it Halloween was a week away.

That week the theater hired guy to work concession. He was tall, at least 6' and muscular. He had wavy blonde hair that came down to his shoulders, and the bluest eyes Victoria had ever seen. She instantly fell for him along with every other girl that worked there. Victoria believing she didn't stand a chance with him or anyone like him. For she, herself, was just average. His name was Benjamin. Ben for short.

Victoria pushed the thought of Ben to the back of her mind and continued on with her life. School, work, and spending what few moments she had with her girlfriends. However, that was getting ready to change.

The theater began scheduling Victoria and Ben a lot of shifts together. Over time they realized the many things that have in common. Soon they became inseparable. The best of friends even though Ben attended a different school.

Time went by extremely fast for Victoria. Soon it would be Christmas break and she would be able to spend more time with Ben. Ben, who she was secretly in love with but didn't want to ruin their friendship over something she considered petty.

It was on this Christmas break that Victoria and Ben made a pact. If one of them did not have a date for the prom, they would go together. Victoria could hardly hold in her excitement. The thought of being Ben's date on the night she'd been dreaming of would be more magical than any she could fathom.

Again time moved swiftly and Spring had arrived. Excitement was all around the school. Everyone discussing the prom, who was going with who, and of course the girls and their dresses. Victoria had agreed to go with her girlfriends to shop for their dresses. She had lost all interests in the prom for she had no date and Ben had a girlfriend. She was only going with them for moral support. As she watched them change, she sat there day dreaming of when she would get to see Ben later that weekend.

Ben was already at work when Victoria arrived. After a few hours working Ben asked Victoria if she remembered the pact they made in December. She did but told him she wasn't holding him to it because he had a girlfriend.

Ben had already explained the situation to his girlfriend. She wasn't happy about it but she understood. Ben told Victoria that she had a date for prom and needed to purchase a dress.

Victoria was amazed and delighted with the news. She called her girlfriends and they chose a day to go shopping for her dress. She couldn't wait. Her dreams were coming true.

Finally. It was time. Victoria had the whole day planned. She made an appointment to have her nails, make up and hair done. All of this would be done before she put on the perfect, short, blue strapless satin dress. For once in Victoria's life she was going to know what it felt like to be a girlie girl.

Things were going as planned, or so she thought. Victoria came home from her hair appointment to find a package on the porch. As she leaned down to pick up the package her phone ring. Ben's father was on the other end. He knew he needed to talk to her but could not bear to do it in person.

He began the conversation with how much Ben had been looking forward to tonight. Victoria couldn't understand what he was trying to tell her. He started slow trying to hold back the tears.

Ben had started his Saturday like any other. He got up, ate breakfast, and went to shoot hoops with the boys. It happened on the drive to the park. Ben had been in an accident. A fatal accident. The other car had been driving down the street toward Ben's car, crossing the center line and hitting his car head on.

Inside the package was her corsage she was supposed to wear that night. Her magical night. For her date with Ben. Victoria sat there paralyzed, not knowing what to do next. She placed the corsage on her wrist. Crying, staring out the window as she did. It was then that heaven opened up and cried with her too.
