The Veil Vows

"...She took a deep breath and searched for the pinks..."

Anne blinked. Then there it was. It was all surreal. She looked down at her bouquet filled with white flowers of all sorts and then at her hand holding it, no ring. Her father was on her left side, walking her down the grass aisle. His eyes were filled with tears, but he blinked them away. She smiled to herself trying to hold back her own because this was supposed to be a happy day, no one could see her watery eyes through her white veil anyways.

They walked until she was at the altar between the two loves of her life. One's little girl she had been and soon to one she’d spend the rest of her life. After her father gave her away, she was face to face with Clay and looked into his brown eyes. In that moment she noticed every shade they withheld, the moments passed, fast leading up to them saying their vows.

“The couple has written their own vows,” the Minister spoke to the crowd.

“Begin when you’re ready,” he whispered to them and smiled.

She looked at him and nodded letting him know she understood, she then looked back at Clay. She could feel a smile forming on her face and tears about to fall, but he laughed lightly and gently wiped them away off her face making sure not to ruin her make-up. God, she’s beautiful. Clay thought to himself. Anne finally began to find the words to speak,

“I’ve prayed for you. I’ve loved you. I’ve done everything in my power to do right by you. I’ve dreamed about this day since I was seven, every detail from the date to the napkins' egg-white shading,” she points to the tables to the far left of the yard. The audience laughs.

“I, before you, did everything for myself. Never really made a selfless decision, more so always selfish. Then I met someone who I wanted more for than myself. Someone who I prayed for their troubles to go away more than my own. Someone who’s happiness I wanted more than my own. Someone who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, regardless if they were good or bad days.. I found someone I wanted to take it all on with. I found someone who made me fall in love brown eyes. In this journey, I’m one of the lucky ones.. I found the love of my life. I found you, Clay.”

Clay wiped the tears from Anne’s eyes and kissed her cheek before beginning to speak his own vows. He took a deep breath and looked around at the crowd to scan for his mother, he locked eyes with her and she put a thumbs up and mouthed “You got this.” He turned to look back at Anne, he reached into his pocket to pull out a piece of paper and unfolded it. He looked at her then back at the paper and then crumbled it up and threw it away. The crowd seemed confused, as did Anne. Clay winked at her before breathing deeply one more time to calm his nerves.

“You’re always on my mind. You have this light about you that never goes dull, I crave your presence, to just be around you. You are the reason for my drive, you're my smile, you're my why. You’re the end goal for me. When things are tough, I just close my eyes and it hits me out of nowhere, there you are... just like that. You aren’t the sunset or the sky or anything like that, you are every little thing that makes something like that so special. You are the perfect wind, the beautiful pinks and oranges, the stars, and the moon. You are what God puts in the world to make every moment beautiful and worth treasuring. If you ever wonder if I love you, search for the pinks. They’re hard to find sometimes, but they’re always there as I will be. I love you.”

Anne felt the tears streaming down her face and saw Clay’s eyes filled with water, but they both smiled.

Bang. A gun went off. Her eyes widened from the sound of the last shot, then she looked back down and blinked. She was back to reality.

Her ring was on her hand, but she wasn’t holding an all white bouquet, but instead a folded up flag. Her white veil, faded into a black one. The smiles in the crowd three years prior had now turned into sobbing faces mourning the fallen hero. Anne's eyes were filled with tears as well, but she didn’t let them fall, instead she took a deep breath and searched for the pinks.
