Those Awkward 5 Minutes

Because Meeting Someone New Is Always Awkward

It is an indubitable fact that when we are communicating with other people, we tend to look at them very carefully. Sometimes we create this awkward atmosphere where your companion just wants to run away. So, should we look at our partner or should we look at something else? Isn't it rude to look in multiple directions while we are talking and listening to another person? Well, it may change with the situation. I believe that it is all about the balance between both things.

Let's present an example: we arrive to any place, a mall, and we are meeting a group of friends, but there are some people with them that you don't recognize. One of your friends quickly introduces you and you start a conversation with a new person. Before you notice it, you are talking with this stranger and you ask yourself: "What should I ask now? How can I make us join the group again? Should I keep looking at him? I'm starting to feel a little bit awkward…" Then a quick question brings you back to life again and you say, "Sorry? "

He answers your question. "No, I was just wondering if you know what is the movie we are going to see right now?" he repeats with a higher voice.

"Oh, no… Should we… ask… the others?" you say slowly because, in fact, you know which movie you are seeing, but you are desperate to stop talking so close, you feel an urge to run from there. Then he turns to your friends and ask.

And suddenly everything works out again. You are with the group and you start looking at all of them depending of which one is speaking. You enter the cinema, the movie starts, it ends, and the rest of the night goes well. Suddenly, when you are on your way home, somebody texts you. "Hey! What did you think about him?"

"Him? Why are you asking?" you answer, startled.

"Well, it seemed as if he liked you and you were quite interested as well, right?"

"But, couldn't they see how awkward it was for me? How can they confuse that with…" Suddenly a million questions start to appear in front of you and before you even realize it, all your thoughts start going around those five awkward minutes. Then you get home and a you see a confused girl watching you through a mirror…

STOP!

You make your mind up and try to think about any other thing, change yourself, and after brushing your teeth, you go to bed. Everything is fine, you are right about to enter a deep dream, and suddenly "… It seemed as if he liked you…"

DAMN IT!

Why would she have said that? But most important… why do I bother thinking about it? But it doesn't matter, your mind starts working again. You are more awake than ever and you only have two different thoughts in your head: Does he really like me? And I really need to sleep RIGHT NOW. Before you know it, it is already 3 o'clock in the morning so you just get up and try to do something else. You resign on doing anything else and watch TV. Right after that, you realise that it is already 6 o'clock.

"Oh well, I will make some coffee and go out to my university."

You make some coffee, drink it, and go to the bathroom to take a shower. You don't need to rush so you just take your time and after you finish your shower, you pick your outfit carefully. When you think you have everything ready, the girl in the mirror appears again. "Hey, looking good, right?" she says mockingly for the dark circles under her eyes. Then you sigh and open the door.

"Looking good, indeed."
