If you’re somewhat new to the singles scene, you may have noticed that everyone seems to be swiping, not dating. Welcome to the new swipe happy dating culture! I’ve been divorced for more than a decade now, and I’m still swiping left when I should’ve swiped right…or was it the other way around? Anyhow, once something takes hold and becomes popular, you may as well embrace it! After all, these dating apps aren’t going anywhere. In fact, new ones keep popping up every day. So, let’s embrace change and learn how to navigate it, shall we?

For Women

1. Find the right app.

When jumping onboard the swipe culture, it’s super important to find the right app that fits what you’re looking for. Interested in hookups? Tinder is an all-star for that. Want to be in control and make the first move? Try Bumble. Do some research before diving in.

2. It’s not stalking!

Before you give some dude your phone number, do your research. It’s not stalking, it’s called being informed. If you have some mutual friends, do some digging. Check out his Facebook profile. Does he look the same as his Zoosk picture? If possible, contact one of your mutual friends and get the scoop.

3. Take it offline.

When dating through an app, you’re going to want to take it offline as quickly as possible. There’s no point in chatting for months on end when there’s zero possibility the two of you will ever end up together. If he checks out, press for a phone call. If that goes well, meet up in person. Stop wasting your precious time!

For Men

1. Be yourself.

I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to just be yourself. If she doesn’t like the real you, why would you want to date her anyway? Your picture should look like you yesterday, um, not like you did ten years ago. Please make sure it’s a recent photo, and put on a shirt! There’s plenty of time later to impress her with those rock hard abs.

2. Be honest.

See how I always throw that into my articles? Don’t make your profile full of stuff that’s not even remotely true. Trust me, she’ll find out the truth soon enough and then she won’t be able to trust you. This is not a great way to start any relationship!

3. Don’t think that there are plenty of fish in the sea.

The problem with online dating is that it gives us the impression that there are plenty of fish in the sea. While there are plenty of singletons out there, finding one that you truly connect with and see a future with is so rare. If you find an amazing woman that you click with, do everything you can to keep her dating you! Remember that no one is perfect (including you). Don’t dump her over the slightest imperfection. She may not give you a second chance. Don’t live with that regret!
