True Confessions (Part One)

Amber Lansing, age 20, has a very close group of friends. They all went to the same high school together and became best friends. They even enrolled and got accepted into the same college. Amber felt pretty good about the fact that her friends were so loyal, they had all been through a lot together and it warmed her heart that such friends still existed. She trusted them with her life so she figured it was time to have a meeting with her group of friends and tell them the secret that she hid from them. She trusted them, knew they were loyal, but some secrets were best left until the timing was right. Her group of friends had been through a lot in the last two years especially, so she knew then that it wasn't the right time to tell them the secret she had hid from them for so long. She knew that now was the right time, as things in her group were going quite well, she only hoped that her friends would understand why she kept this secret from them.

Amber went to her dorm room, grabbed her book for her last class of the day, sent a group text to her four closest friends, Kelly, Laura, Ethan, and Mark about meeting at their special place, then headed to class. Her class seemed to have gone by rather slowly, but she was glad when the teacher told them that class was over and they could be excused. She grabbed her books, headed out the door, and began making a quick pace to the commons area in a corner booth that provided some privacy from everyone else. It was where her and her group of friends would often meet so they could discuss important things going on in their lives and figure out ways to help each other out. She arrived first of the group and was happy to have time to order a round of drinks for everyone.

The next to arrive at their special place was Kelly Sharp who was also 20 years old and was very smart at just about everything she tried to do. She sat down, smiled at Amber, took a drink of her soda, then patiently waited for the rest of the group to arrive. After Kelly, came Laura and Ethan who were both science majors and were still dressed in their freshly pressed white lab coats. Finally, the last to arrive was Mark, who was a communications major and had his last class the furthest away from the commons area on the campus. After everyone was seated, Amber took another drink of her soda, and waited until the waitress came and placed five orders of mozzarella sticks in front of everyone, then she left and Amber knew it was safe to start the discussion.

"First off, I am glad to see that everyone got my urgent text message and has met me here in our special place."

Kelly shifted slightly in her chair and finished chewing on a bite of her mozzarella stick then leaned forward in order to hear Amber more closely. "No problem, Amber that is what friends are for. So what is this meeting all about anyways? I am sure we are all anxious to hear what you have to say."

Amber drank another sip of her soda and swallowed hard, she was very nervous about revealing what she kept inside for so long. But she also knew that she had to tell someone and who better than her four closest friends? "Well you all know that I love you all like brothers and sisters. You know that I trust you with my life, just like you trust me with yours. We have helped each other through some tough times. But there is something that I haven't told you yet, but I think it is finally time to tell you what I have been keeping to myself."

Laura looked at Amber with a look of shock on her face and took a slow sip of her soda. "Amber you kept something from us? But why? We are your closest friends."

"I only kept it from you because in the last two years we have all been through some rough and trying times. I knew then that those weren't the right times to say anything. Now, however, I know it is the right time."

Kelly looked at Amber in deep curiosity as she finished her mozzarella sticks. "Ok, so why didn't you say something before the bad stuff happened?"

"Because then I wasn't entirely sure, now I am."

Laura took a moment to take another sip of her soda. "Ok so you are sure now and we are doing well, so what is the secret that you have been hiding from us?"

"Well I discovered that I don't like the company of men. I wanted to be sure and now I am sure. I feel more attracted to women than anything. What I called this meeting for was to tell you all that I am a lesbian. I only hope that you will understand why I haven't told you until now and that you will be here by my side to support me."

Ethan scooted forward after taking the last sip of his soda. "Amber of course we understand why it took you until now to say something. We are your friends no matter what. We will be here for you in any way that we can. Right guys?"

Mark nodded his head. "Yes of course, I will be here to help you through this. At least now we know. Laura?"

"Yeah I am glad that you decided to tell us when you knew for sure and when the time was right. Kelly, is something wrong?"

"No, like all of you I am just glad that we know now. Amber, have you told your parents yet?"

"No, you guys were the first I told. I would like it if at least one or two of you came with me when I did tell them."

Laura gathered up all of our trash to take to the trash can for us, and when she returned she had a smile on her face. "Of course you know that Kelly and I will be there for you when you tell them, you will need all the support you can get."

"Thanks guys, I really appreciate everything you guys have done for me. I am glad that you understand. I feel so much better now that I have told you all."

They all got up from their table, gathered their things, and headed outside towards the dorms. Amber and Kelly hugged before they went to their separate dorms. Amber now knew that she had a tough road ahead with having to tell her parents and the rest of her family. But she also knew that throughout the whole journey she would have the support of her four best friends, and that is what really mattered.
