True Confessions (Part Two)

Ethan Tandum, age 20, is part of a very close group of friends. They all went to the same high school together and became best friends. They even decided to enroll into the same college. Ethan felt pretty good about the fact that his friends were so trustworthy, they had all been through a lot together lately and it made him feel good to know that such friends still existed. He trusted them with his life so he thought it was finally time to have a discussion with his group of friends and tell them what's been going on with him. He knew he could trust them, knew they were loyal, but some secrets were best left until the timing was right. This particular group of friends had been through a lot in the last few years, so he knew that it wasn't the right time to tell his friends what he was going through, so he had waited until the time was right to say anything. He only hoped that his friends would understand why he hadn't said anything about his problem before now.

Ethan headed out to his last class of the day while sending a group text to his four closest friends, Kelly, Laura, Amber, and Mark about meeting at their special place. His class seemed to have gone by rather slowly, but he was glad when his favorite professor told them that class was over and he was soon headed over to meet his friends. The meeting place was where him and his group of friends would discuss important things going on in their lives and figure out ways to help each other out. He arrived first of the group and was glad to have some time to order a round of drinks and a snack for everyone.

The next to arrive at their special place was Mark Docket who was also 20 years old and was very creative at just about everything he tried to accomplish. Mark sat down, nodded at Ethan, took a sip of his drink, then patiently waited for the rest of the group to arrive. After Mark, came Laura and Kelly who were both into science and history and were still dressed in their freshly pressed uniforms. Finally, the last to arrive was Amber, who was an education major and had her last class end the latest of the day. After everyone was seated, Ethan watched as a waitress came by and placed five orders of nachos on the table in front of them along with some napkins. Once the waitress had disappeared back into the kitchen, Ethan knew that it was safe to start the meeting with his friends.

"First off, I am glad to see that everyone got my group text message and has met me here in our special place."

Mark shifted slightly in his chair and finished chewing on a bite of his nachos then leaned forward in order to hear Ethan more closely. "Not a problem, Ethan that is what we are here for. So what is this meeting all about anyways? I am sure we are all anxious to hear what you have to say. We are all here to listen."

Ethan swallowed hard and looked around at his group of friends, trying to figure out how to begin such a conversation. But he also knew that he had to get it out in the open and no other group was as good as his four closest friends who now saw around the table. "Well you all know that I trust you with my life, just like you all trust me with yours. We have helped each other through some tough times. But there is something that I haven't told you yet, but I think it is finally time to say what has been going on with me lately."

Laura looked at Ethan with a look of shock on her face and took a slow sip of her soda. "Ethan you also kept something from us? But why? We are your closest friends and you know you can count on us."

"I only kept it from you because in the last two years we have all been through some tough times. Like Amber, I simply wanted to wait until the time was right, and we were all at a better place."

Mark looked at Ethan with deep concern as he finished his order of nachos. "Ok, so why didn't you say something before?"

"Because I was in denial then about everything. Now I know better."

Kelly took a moment to take another sip of her soda. "Ok now that we are all better, what is it that you need to tell us?"

"Well first off, my parents are not as happy as they seem. They fight a lot, so in order to deal with that my older brother taunts and teases me. He makes it a goal of his to emotionally ruin any hopes I have. In order to deal with all of this going on, I started taking speed at first, mostly to stay awake when I needed to. Then I started getting addicted to pain killers and then one of the frat guys got me interested in some other drugs. I know that you all will understand why I haven't told you until now and that you will be here by my side to support me as I have decided to enter an after school rehabilitation program."

Mark scooted forward after taking the last sip of his soda. "Ethan of course we understand why it took you until now to say anything. That is a lot to go through, we only wished we had known sooner so we could have been there for you, but we are all here for you now."

Laura nodded her head. "Yes of course, I will be here to help you through this any way I can. Kelly?"

"Yeah I am glad that you decided to tell us now that you know for sure what you want to do to make this right. Amber, is something wrong? You look worried."

"No, like all of you I am just glad that we know what has been going on with Ethan. I am really glad to hear that you are going into rehabilitation to recover from this. Have you told your family yet?"

"No, you guys were the first people told. I would like it if at least one or two of you came with me when I did tell them for moral support."

Laura gathered up all of our trash to take to the trash can for us, and when she returned she had a smile on her face. "Of course you know that Mark will be there for you when you tell your family and the rest of us as well, you will need all the support you can get."

"Thanks guys, I really appreciate everything you guys have done for me. I am glad that you all know why I have been so spaced out lately and distracted. I feel so much better and I am more confident about telling may family now that I know you all will be there."

They all got up from their table, gathered their things, and headed outside towards the dorms. Ethan and Mark hugged before they went to their separate dorms. Ethan knew that he had a tough decision ahead with having to tell his family and other close friends of what he has been going through and what he wants to do about it. He also knew he would have all the support in the world from his four best friends, and he knew that all the support would help him get through whatever obstacles were ahead of him.
