"You can do this!" I repeated to myself with doubt.

I stood there trying to convince myself that she was human, just like me and everyone else that lived in this unfair world.

But how could someone so perfect exist? You couldn't spot a flaw from a mile away.

She was just a "girl."

That's all she was, a "girl."

So why couldn't I move my feet? They were subconsciously glued to the boardwalk. I felt my heart thud; what would a girl like that want with someone like me?

I was playing myself.

Not until she was waving her hand in my face that I realized I was staring.

"Macy?"

Her lips moved, but I didn't hear a thing she said.

Her enchanting crimson curls sat lightly on her shoulders. A small breeze had blown, shifting her fringe to one side of her face.

I stood in awe as I took in her perfect tan complexion.

"Macy, are you alright in there?"

She seemed to find me amusing.

My mouth opened, but not a word was formed.

I just shook my head as I looked at her. Her head slightly tilted, her expression covered by humor and confusion.

"Are you even listening to me? I asked did you want some popcorn?"

She innocently lifted the red and white box in my direction.

"I am—Yeah... Thanks."

Losing my train of thought I pulled my sweaty hand out of my coat pocket and grabbed a handful.

"You know Mace, you usually love the carnival." She thought (I didn't mean to disappoint you).

"I do," I stated. (I also love you.)

"Then what's the distraction?" Her eyes looked in a few directions then back at me.

"Nothing." Lies. I was lying.

She knew it too, by the flustered face I gave. I felt my face begin to burn.

Then a sudden rush of giggles and joy lit her up. She grabbed me by my hands and did a small dance before speaking.

"Is it a guy? Who is he?" she said searching around.

I couldn't help but smile at this. She didn't realize how happy she made me.

"No, it's not a guy! I just..."

"Macy, you're not a good liar," she joked.

"I'm not lying," I said sounding defensive.

"Calm down, it was just a joke, Macy." She shrugged.

"It wasn't funny," I snapped.

Her big brown eyes saddened at my answer as she turned away from me. (That hurt.)

She bit her lip and looked down at her popcorn.

"Jaime, I-I didn't mean..."

"It's okay."

I reached for her hand hesitantly, but I was interrupted by a big pair of arms wrapping themselves around the both of us.

I wanted to tell her. I really did.

"What are you suckers doing here?" Spencer's voice boomed killing the silence that was between us.

Jaime gave him a fake smile.

"Trying to enjoy the carnival." she stated coldly, glancing at me. I dug my hands deep in my pockets and looked away.

Spencer has always had a thing for Jaime since we were kids. I mean who doesn't have a thing for her? Those chocolate eyes and adorable strawberry curls. Her freckles seem to make her even cuter, if it was possible. And oh that smile, it was perfectly framed by those soft pink lips and the deepest dimples.

She was flawless!

"'Stick in the mud' here doesn't know how to have fun, huh?" he said nodding my way.

Jaime giggled at his obnoxious humor.

I ignored him. I needed a way to get her alone.

Then when I saw the man in the brightly colored suit holding balloons, I smiled.

"Oh, look balloons!" I beamed. Jaime loved balloons. I looked at her willingly and she gave me the smile that had disappeared earlier. My heart skipped a few beats.

"Aww, I hate clowns," Spencer mumbled.

"I think they're cute, right Mace?" Jaime smiled as she grabbed my arm.

We walked over to the man holding the balloons.

I dug in my pocket for some cash and held it out to the guy.

"Two balloons please!"

The guy joyfully handed a pink and purple balloon to me and I turned to Jaime.

"I'm sorry," I said pitifully as I gave her a balloon.

Her face softened as she bit her lip.

"It's okay Mace, it's just that you've been acting funny for a while. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." She took the balloon. "You're my best friend."

She smiled as her other hand intertwined with mine.

It felt so right.

I smiled at her. "And you're mine."

As we headed down the boardwalk, holding hands, she leaned in and laid her head on my shoulder. "I love you, Mace."

My heart soared hearing her say it. Even though she didn't mean it how I wanted her to. I was okay with it. Something in my heart couldn't tell her otherwise, so I just told her the truth.

"I love you too, Jaime." More than you will ever know.

I guess it will have to wait until tomorrow.
