There are many secrets to maintaining a good marriage. One of those keys would have to be spending time together. It seems almost impossible to keep a relationship healthy if two people never spend time together. This of course can be done in many different ways. Perhaps surprisingly, one of those ways is through watching TV. Although this may seem like non-engaging or even impossible feet, watching TV together with your spouse can be a great way to strengthen your marriage.

Share an Experience

Many people may feel watching is wasted time. The reality however is that binging a television show together can an excellent way to bring a couple together. Watching a television show together creates a shared experience between two people. Some of the things a couple will have in common include shared vocabulary, inside jokes, and an easy reason to come together without the demand of finding some entertainment. The simple act of being together watching a show can often be underrated. It helps to keep a couple connect and provides a feeling of togetherness.

Quality time can have different levels. Watching a television show might not be on the same level as going out for dinner or having an intimate conversation. However if a couple is together without distraction, holding hands or laughing together the experience of watching television can be great. Furthermore if one person is committing to watch a show that the other person is exciting about it shows that they care about the person.

Create Conversation

Another great way that watching TV strengthens a relationship is through conversation. Marriage can sometimes become repetitive. Topics like work, kids, or finances may become everyday conversations. Watching a show together can give a couple something fresh and new to discuss. It also may lead to other conversations that extend beyond just the contents of the TV show. This may include cultural moments along with personal values.

There are a number of older TV shows that come back as reboots. The Discovery Company TV network has a number of these shows. This provides a unique opportunity to discuss what the original show was like and how it compares to the new version. Learning about someone's story and the shows they watched growing up is a great way to get to know them. The conversation is almost sure to continue flowing as long as one member of the pair does not become bored with the show.

Spend Time together

Watching a television show can be a driving force in spending time together. It is easy for a couple to get busy with work, kids and other responsibilities. Watching a show together can be a great way of forcing a couple to spend time together. When the evening comes instead of each person going their separate ways they now have something bringing them together. Even if one person wants to do something alone, the other person may encourage them to sit down and watch the show. Each person becomes invested in something and there is a desire to finish. Also if both people are really into the show and excited about it, watching TV can provide a sense of joy that sparks the desire to spend time together.

Watching television has gotten a bad rap. It is not necessarily the most engaging activity but it can be a great way for couples to spend time together. It sparks conversation and gives couples a distraction from the repetitive nature marriage can sometimes take. Watching TV can be a healthy activity to include in a marriage. If done correctly it can be something that strengthens your marriage.
