We Are Alive: The Intricacies of Existence

What does it mean to be alive?

Life continues

Life, it surrounds us, lives within us and sustains us. Many people are alive, but most never get to live.

Have you ever stopped to think about the miracles that surround us. Each day we walk on this planet teeming with life, yet we fail to see it’s wonders. That life takes on many forms but all share an evolutionary history of struggle.

All matter that surrounds us was once part of something else, a star shining brightly at the beginning of this universe. Over the eons it broke apart and came together again to form the planets and then the beginnings of life on this planet.

From this primordial ooze, the divine allowed life to emerge. From single cells to complex behemoths, life evolved and changed.

From this system of evolution created by the divine, we came into form. A bipedal race not much more complex than other forms of life, and yet, we were gifted with something so beautiful it sets us apart.

Most would say our minds were the gift, but I know it is our hearts, our souls, that make us more than we think, more than we dream. Humankind began humbly, taking our first steps into a world teeming with beauty and danger, growing, learning and evolving through toil and trouble. Each mistake, each success, each dream taking us that much closer to an answer, a new way of being, of doing, of living.

Through this struggle, we evolved not only physiologically but spiritually as well. As our need to procreate gave way to love, our hearts flourished and evolved. As we evolved who we were and what we stood for, the connections made between each other by our hearts and dreams gave us the ability to make a new way of life.

We as a species created families, and these families grew and evolved into lineages, carrying the hopes and dreams from yesterday into today like an echo. We began to group together, seeking out each other in the unknown areas of the past and walking together forward to usher in new life and new possibilities.

Through this, we created wonders of all aspects, our hopes and dreams made real by us and by those torchbearers that followed. From this epoch of life we created music, literature, science, math, language, art and wonder. These were created by us not only to remind ourselves that we were alive, but to remind us why. These testaments of the past brought to life by our passions and hearts, carrying our echos into the future.

Each generation, alive and dreaming, adding to that echo, evolving its voice as we ourselves evolved. These voices taking on lives of their own as they harmonized together to create a symphony. A song hurled at death itself, reminding us and those that came after that we were alive, we mattered.

We are alive, we exist together on this planet hurtling through space. Each of us have a contribution for the whole of humankind. To live, love, laugh and evolve not only ourselves, but life itself, its meaning, its intricacies, its legacy.

The legacy of being alive, the gift that brings air to our lungs, passion to our minds and love to our hearts. Life is miraculous, and each person whose heart beats adds to the collective expression of life.

Life is important; each life that exists, be it from the smallest insect to the largest mammal, adds to the breath of life, the heartbeat of existence. We who live must contribute to that heartbeat, allowing life to continue.

Understanding, protecting, evolving who we are and where we are going together, each of us contributing to the tempo, the beat that sustains the heartbeat.

We as a society have come to devalue life to such a degree that people feel they have a right to end it, disrupting the heartbeat of existence. Each death, each life that suffers from cruelty, damages us all. We lose a piece of ourselves each time a life is cut short, as it disrupts that rhythm, the rhythm of existence.

We are one people united by many things, but the basis is the fact that we are alive. Life needs to defend life for existence to continue.

Life can be more beautiful than it is now. It’s full of wonder and excitement that very few of us can see. We must support life, sustain it, create it, and evolve it to ensure that it carries the human race forward into beauty and wonder.

If we don’t defend all life, then who will defend us when we need defending?
