Winter Light

A short poem for someone I love

Beautiful boy,

you are summer nights.

You are too-hot, too-heavy sheets

and the insatiable urge

to drive all night

just to see the stars.

Gorgeous boy,

you are an August thunderstorm.

You are the world after the rain

when everything shines

in the emerging light.

You are the smell of earth and sky,

the scent of new beginnings.

Wonderful boy,

you are the sunlight on the coldest days.

Even when it gets too dark too soon,

you remind me that

not even December frost

lasts all year.

And even at

the end of all things,

I would be honoured

to let you melt my ice.
