The Lost Mental Illness: Understanding and Supporting a Loved One Who Suffers From Anxiety Disorder
The above image was selected after careful deliberation. Anxiety takes many forms; two that are commonly overlooked is a lack of self-care, and a forced smile that is only infrequently convincing.

Fellow Creatives, Is Your Productivity Suffering Because You Spend Too Much Time Worrying About the Bills?
I’ve been there. The stress was overwhelming. Late bills. Bounced checks. Both SoCal Gas and the Department of Water and Power ringing my doorbell for disconnection.

I Am An Avowed Liberal Who Listens to Conservative Radio In My Car. This is My Takeaway.
There was an old saying in my neighborhood when I was a kid: “You say white, I say black. We’ll never agree on anything.” If only it was that simple. Today’s rule: The Republican lawmakers must keep their President in the White House at all costs. If not, the Senate assuredly would lose their majority, and the domino effect of lost re-election campaigns would be catastrophic.

What Is a Writer, Anyway?
That quote is one of my favorites ever on the craft of writing. Hemingway bled and then bled some more, creating some of our greatest literary fiction (“The Old Man and the Sea,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “The Sun Also Rises,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls”) … until he died in 1961 under curious circumstances.

You Only Think You Want to Be Rich
“Treasure what you have, not what you don’t.” — Dad I’ve always wanted to be wealthy, but I never looked at wealth as an end goal. I looked at doing good work, and raising brows with my writing. I wanted to make a difference and leave the world a better place than the one I entered.

The Artist or the Art?
In 1977, 44-year-old director Roman Polanski was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl. The charges included rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious act upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor. Polanski pled “not guilty” to all charges, then later accepted a plea deal in exhange for a lesser charge. When he learned he was likely going to be imprisoned and face deportation, he fled to France the following February, where he has been ever since.

When an Abused Family Member Dates or Marries a Significant Other From a Loving Family
Many years ago, I dated a woman whose father had physically and verbally abused her, which she did not admit to me until nearly a year into our relationship. I was concerned with my partner’s mood swings, especially as Bipolar Disorder was common in her family and my best friend was a sufferer, but she visited the doctor and was not diagnosed as such.

Dear Writers: Everyone Knows Everything, and No One Knows Anything … Except for Yoda and Stephen King.
I write about writing, nearly an article a day on the craft that, in part, pays my bills and keeps food on the table. Yet, as much as I write, I read about writing that much more.

“I Only Write For The Sex”
“Sex and the City’s” Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) was a New York City columnist who lived her version of the writer’s life to the hilt and shared her experiences with the world. Everyone was fair game; privacy existed for no one who crossed her path.

Six Steps to Light: Overcoming Acute Panic Disorder
My dog, KOKO, is very well-behaved and lovable but also anti-social. When she sees another dog on a leash, her light brown hair from neck to tail stands on end, giving the appearance of turning dark. She becomes highly-agitated and begins to bark.
